The pump continues running and circulating the coolant for approx 5 minutes after engine shutdown to ensure 'even' engine cooldown and avoid any hot spots build up.

The continued circulation after engine shutdown by the pump also doubles up to provide about 20 minutes of interior heating without the engine running using the ambient water temp', this function is known as 'REST' and is fitted to later ML's with climate control systems.
