I am looking to purchase a replacement for my 1999 C 200 which is showing signs of rusting (not covered under the usual warranties) and am torn between a 57/08 reg C Class or an E class a year older i.e. 56/07 reg. I appreciate the new E class is about to surface and the C class will undergo a facelift in 18 months or so if the current trend continues

I am not an expert in cars but love mercs . Any assistance/guidance would be very welcome.

The riding quality of the 211 is very good along with nice appointments, that would be my choice.

Agreed, if the purchase and running costs of an E are viable and the size isn't a concern, then whilst the C is lovely, the E is a MUCH nicer car, in the same way as an S is a much nicer car than the E.

I had quite a few of the new c-class as loaners when my W203 was at the stealers (a lot) and I must say I found it to be very similar to drive to a Vauxhall Vectra. I had some quite highly specced ones too, with leather etc. It just felt cheap. Even cheaper than my W203.

They also loaned me one E class (that had a very nice Brabus engine managment chip in it) and frankly there is no competition in my opinion. The E-class was much nicer. Almost nice enough to make me consider buying another Merc....almost.

Is the 220 CDI powerful enough in the E Class. I had a W 203 C class 220 CDI which was reasonably quick and good mpg. Is the engine in the current E class the same or a more advanced version?

If you want a real Merc then it has to be the W211.

AS ever you budget plays a major part, if you hang around you will find someone selling a V6 for the price of a 220.

I got a great deal on my E-280cdi 4 months ago and the price i paid is still cheaper than what 220s are still getting sold for today, not saying there is anything wrong with the 220 but if your getting the V6 for the same price or even less then i know my choice.
