Is it me or it is my W203 or is it the petrol stations I use? Can anyone just stick the gun in the petrol filler pull the trigger fully and have it automatically trip off when full.Twice very recently admittedly at the same station but not the same pump I,ve run out of time and only 3/4 filled. Am I the only one having this problem.

We pay about 98c for diesel, I think about 68p.....I usually end up down to the last 3 or 4 litres and then fill it myself.........You will never get it totally full without doing it slowly, diesel froths too much. However if you put a tank at home and use gravity feed it is easy because it won't froth....and its about 10c a litre cheaper.

I did my shopping in Tesco today. They gave me a voucher entitling me to 5c per litre discount off my next fillup. That helps when you have an 80litre tank.

BTW that works out at 93.9c or 64p a litre for unleaded (good bit cheaper than UK?) (used to be the opposite).

Normal Unleaded by me is 82p a litre. Then again my insurance is £286 per year fully comprehensive with breakdown cover, I think it is a bit more over with you?

Ok David.......

Car tax....for year...I think about ?1200 [£800 or so...]..you pay?? £180??
Insurance...comprehensive, business use and 1 named driver [business partner]...?1200 last year...[£800 again]...you pay?? £250...
Diesel, now costing me 87c, or about 58p....you pay...84p?? more??
Mileage 20,000....about £750 cheaper over a year...
Not having to pay 20p for air pump to check tyres....????
Labour cost for servicing ?75 [£49] per hour....you pay? £75? possibly £250 saving at 10 hours over year....
Tyres....mine cost ?130 for Pirelli P6000...always more expensive on UK websites., £150 upwards....
Parking....work parking costs me about ?850 for the year...£570 or so....

All in all its pretty much break even either side for running costs except we pay a 25% tax on new cars......

its fascinating the way it all seems to work out the same in the end.

Sounds to me like we in the UK should take some nice short break driving holidays in Ireland and whilst we are over get the car serviced, get some new tyres and not forgetting to fill up on the way out... not forgetting to add to your economy by drinking copious amounts of the the black velvety stuff....

Back about 10 years ago, driving a Pajero (shogun), I was exiting the M50 on the road that used to lead to Dunlaire Ferry. There was this UK Montego (dreadful car) with a caravan behind, pulled in. I stopped, and his missus was giving out stink to him. She said he wouldn't put petrol in the car, cause it was cheaper the other side of the Irish sea.

Anyway, I towed car and caravan behind the pajero, off the sliproad and about 3 more miles to a filling station. The good gentleman wanted to give me money, which of coarse I declined to accept. A few weeks later they sent me a thankyou card with a beautiful photo on it.

When I lived in London (early to late eighties), and then moved to Dublin area, the extra cost of motoring here was huge. Now it's much of a muchness, except in London, it's all one big traffic jam.

David, your car is rated group 20. If you were to insure it in a London surburb, it would probably cost a lot more. I'm in a Dublin suburb, and my car is fully comp, for £750, but for the replace value of £30k.

It's the truck drivers in the UK I feel sorry for though.

I do have my car on collectors car insurance so it is cheaper to insure than my Golf GT TDI so its not a fair comparison with a standard policy . It would be about £550 on standard insurance with my full no claims. Still a bargain in my opinion.

I presume your replacement values are higher because of the car tax?

Yea David,
The dreaded VRT (formally known as Mr. Duty) + our Vat is 21%.

The £550 you state is a good price too. How much extra would that be in one of your larger cities, like London?
