......and the standard response is 'get the codes read', without the codes or live data then diagnosis is the 'finger in the air' method which can get expensive because it leads to randomly throwing parts at it.

Seems often at the moment, lots of new owners join for some advice hoping for a quick fix, cars simplys arent just mechanical nowadays.

Get the fluid level checked would be the first thing.
You need a dipstick and a method of reading the fluid temperature.

Andy, from your description the car has gone into "limp" mode - that's a sort of get-u-home condition that's designed to stop serious damage from occurring and apart from checking simple things like the condition and level of auto fluid it needs to be put on to STAR (the MB electronic system). If you post your area (or update your profile) somebody will be able to recommend a Mercedes Indy (Independent) who will be able to put it on STAR and read the fault code(s). These guys are MB enthusiasts and have a wealth of knowledge - we have a number as members on here and they can usually save us a lot of money!

As Larkone said above, this is the correct way to get it sorted and avoids the "try fitting this/that etc" sort of non-diagnosis that usually ends up costing money for nothing.

Good luck!
