r107 500 sl - smell of fumes

Hi, noticing smell of fumes, inside the car with hardtop on but not so much with roof down. Seems quite strong in the boot and i'd best describe it as stale exhaust fumes.

If yo go in the boot even when its not run for a while its quite strong, is there a breather system on the fuel in there or am I barking up wrong tree ?!

Any experience / suggestions would be appreciated !

I think that it is in the nearside wheel arch under the cover or by the sill under the nearside door
