R170 230 SLK - Known Issues?

Hi,

Having had constant problems with my 2004 C220 CDI (110k on the clock) I'm desperate to PX it before something else expensive goes wrong. The local Volvo dealer has a W reg SLK 230 with 69k on the clock on the forecourt for 8k. After some haggling they've offered to pay 5k for my C class - leaving me 3k to pay.

I'm aware of the electrical issues (specifically indicator stalk and roof switches) - but should I be worried about anything else? The car seems rust free and in generally good condition. The engine sounds and drives ok - but ... am I likely trading one problematic car in for another?

I've searched the forum but apart from the electrical problems haven't found much else.

My heart says SLK, my brain says 'get something boring until the recession is out of the way' :(

Don't know if that year engine suffers from it but look for oil in the loom coming from the cam position sensor.

A Starter Line can (or may already) be fitted to prevent further ingress but if the oil's already in the loom then it's probably worked its way to the ECU and O2 sensor.

Apart from looking at the plug on the cam sensor it's probably worth pulling the plug off the pre-cat O2 sensor to see if its full of oil.

I wasn't vigilant enough (heart over-ruled the head) when I bought my Y reg SLK and am now having to deal with this issue.:(

It's still a great car though and with the roof down on days like we've just had, can't be beaten. Except maybe by an SL! :lol:

8k for SLK??? you can buy mine for 7.5k! haha haha - i paid £4200 in jan for a mint w plate
