Following on from other related posts I made, I am (still) trying to find information about replacing the speaker in the right hand side door.

Simple question, for NON Bose sound system has anyone identified a woofer unit that can be used to replace the OEM one? Mine is blown. I am OK with the dismantle of door card and speaker chassis, but 30 minutes of searching and I have not found anything to point me towards a suitable replacement.

I am not going to pay the ebay prices for a 10++ year old woofer which will possibly fail in a short period of time. So I thought I would try to get a new unit that would fit. As far as I can tell this is as easy as matching the impedance and the diameter. I am not going to get overly concerned about it balancing perfectly with the other side, or it being top quality, the speaker is a going into convertible and I have the roof down throughout the 12 months of the year.

Not sure why I am struggling with this so much. I suppose the best thing to do would be just take the old one out and nip off to the nearest halfords/ICE shop and get a new one. However, having had door cards off on a few previous vehicles I find they can be a bit of a fiddle and often fixings get broke and need replacing. I would rather only do this once, and not remove, re-fit, collect speaker, remove and re-fit the door card.

The part number of the entire unit seems to be: A2308201002 but this contains the tweeter and is held in a chassis for both speaker units. I only want to do the woofer. I am aware that it has three fixing screws and most replacement units will have four. I will figure that out later.

Thanks
Mark

There are lots of results from google that look hopeful, only to dig in to the the link and find it is useless. ICE shops with replacement speaker kits for the SL R230 and then when I click into the link I find there is only speaker foam or a roller for speaker foam.
Or links like this where the OP clearly states he has NON-Bose and then everyone talks about the Bose speakers, or the Amps until eventually one member points out the mistakes, and then everyone goes silent.

Ok, one step in the right direction. 16.5 cm.

AND elsewhere I find this information.

Bose Mercedes R230 SL-Class Audio System (2003-2012)
Dash (Center Fill speaker)
230 820 16 02 x1 (2003-2008)
Doors
230 820 09 02 (door speaker assembly) x2 (2003-2007, ?2007-2011?)
3″ speaker + 5.25″ speaker
Footwell Subwoofer x1, right
A2308201802 (2003-2007? 2004)
A2308200502
Under roll bar grill, at side seat belt (Rear Fill speakers)
A2308200702 x2

Stock, non-Bose audio system comparision
Weird thing is that the Bose sound system does not contain any tweeters, compared to the stock speakers configuration, which you can see in the gallery below.

Also, the door woofers are bigger, to compensate lack of subwoofer. For each door, we have:

8″ woofer driver x1
2.5 ohm, fed by separate amplifier channel
4″ mid-range driver x1 + tweeter x1
4 ohm combined, fed by separate amplifier channel
Woofer and midrange have neodymium magnets. By the looks, i’d say it looks like a great configuration, although they are blamed by owners.

So, with that in mind, I guess I need to go for an unit with 2.5 ohms - or close to that. The image above states 16.5 cm so I think that might be the mix I need.

UPDATE: Single unit ordered, will report back on success or failure as I imagine I am not the only one who is going to require a replacement.

None of the above is correct. Replacement speaker arrived. Nowhere near the right size.

Ignore all advice above. Mod - possibly delete entire thread.

Good luck in your search Sausage, I fear the best approach is to take the door panel off and see what you have.

You see, from experience, even buying a speaker of the correct diameter does not mean it will fit. Our Defender takes four inch speakers, however the closest I could find are too thick, so even though the mounting holes and grill fit (sort of) the speakers sit 2mm proud of the dash. Do I care ? No. Could be an issue in the SL though. Pesky manufacturers tend not to use standard sizes, even if there were such a thing as a standard size.

I cut some plywood to fit behind the speakers in my 110 for that exact reason - wiper motor is in the way of the passenger side speaker
