Hi.
Newbie posting for the first time. 'television' suggested raising this as a new thread

I,ve just spent the evening reading a long thread (mebobster Jan this year) regarding a misfire on a 300TD.

Mobobster, did you get it resolved. If not did you sell it to a motor dealer in Portsmouth cause mines got exactly the same issues!! Car was well warmed up when I collected it (mug). Sounds like its starting on just 1 cylinder, smokes like hell then service is resumed as normal for the rest of the day, and runs sweet. Glow plug light goes off initially then comes on again. Eventually it goes out once warmed up to running, temp 3-5mins. I'm assuming its glow plugs and/or fuses but haven't checked yet. Sounds like its going to be fun getting old ones out as cars done 140k and previous threads make for interesting reading.

Did you put it in to a specialist or resolve it yourself as you sound pretty handy with the spanners. I'm a marine engineer but boat engines are about 20years behind in terms of sophistication, but generally they are a lot cleaner!

I'd be interested to know the outcome.

What car is this?

It sounds like you one or more failed glow plugs. They're connected to the relay via a connector. To test them just pull the connector and meter each pin (there are six) to earth. They should be about 0.7 Ohm. If they're very high or short circuit the plug has failed

Next turn the ignition on and meter the volts on the relay pins. They should be about 13 Volts. The outputs will be live for about 60 seconds after which they will fall to zero or to a lower voltage for another timed period. If any are zero immediately after you turn on the ignition with a cold engine the fusible links in the glow plug relay have blown or there's another fault. Anyone competent with a multimeter can do this - it's not rocket science

If you have a real diesel problem I can recommend Auto Marine Diesel in Brighton

sounds like your getting fuel run back over night, they suffer from the pump seals where the pipes leave the pump, also a seal on the stop fails letting air in, sounds to me your bleeding the system every morning!!!!
