All good but the starting price of the car is £100,000-00.

I’m not anti electric cars but they are still too expensive and (purchase price aside) charging is still a problem that is not going away and will get worse as more people switch to electric.
When the world starts travelling for business again, corporate hotels are going to have a challenge providing sufficient charging capacity. I can see the first driver in, hooking their car up then off to the bar, blocking it for anyone else who arrives later

My son is waiting delivery of his EV (Taycan) and they also want to change their Q8 for an EV Suv at some point.

He is looking into charging points at his house & does not want to be restricted to using a 13a slow charge from the wall socket. Not as straight forward as I’d have expected.

They have a 60a main fuse which apparently cannot be changed by your friendly electrician (his brother in law) . Apparently an application has to be made (to UK Power Networks?) by the installer (also has to be a specialist / accredited installer) of the charging point for a fuse / circuit breaker upgrade. Then, their electricity bill is ~£450/month (I think his neighbours have tapped into his electric supply ;)) so he is worried that the main cable may already be maxed out by what they already use:oops:.......etc ......and then there is the expense of getting it all done.

and.....to stay on topic, I think that I will be sticking with my 30mpg (if I’m lucky) SL for the time being.

There is a high likelihood that he could run into network capacity issues...

When I was in Hereford so many of the farmers had installed power generation systems that the local grid couldn't take it all...

I know a site that spent £1.4M upgrading their supply and substation - they then have to spend >£4k per month on a "reservation fee" as they're not using their full capacity at the moment... if they don't pay it the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) can (and will) use their increased capacity for another site

Ah it is the DNO that needs to be involved if you want a bigger fuse.

Some properties have a linked electric supply from the road like mine had. You can’t have a charger fitted if this is the case. Western power put me in a new cable from the road to the new outside meter (it was in the cupboard in the hall)then a new cable from the meter to my consumer unit in the hall all free of charge. The only thing I had to do was cut out the brick work where the meter cupboard fitted as i wanted a flush mount box and they only do surface mount.

£450 pm...before an EV? What does he run in the house?

House is massive & old, no double glazing, underfloor heating in 3 out of 4 bathrooms - 2 running all year round, wine cellar with A/c to keep the wine happy , massive electric AGA cooker - on all year round, about 5 fridges/freezers.......etc. You do the maths. Going to be even worse after April.

Personally, I find it extravagant and wasteful but, it is not my money.

It's surprising how it mounts up when you have a few things going, our electric bill is high also.

If we swapped the three cars for electric I can't see how it would cope and then there are the neighbours who all have similar properties.
I can imagine a nice cleared stripe in the snow above the street cable.

Methinks electric has some hurdles to overcome, talking to a man involved in hydrogen who seems to think it will be in the mix.

We will probably end up with coal.

Yep and his main fuse is only 60A so now he has the whole rigmarole of getting his incoming power upgraded and because the breaker board is about 2m (not sure of the exact height) above ground, it has to be a specialist (qualified for working on electricity at height) to sort it out.

Seems that EV is not as simple as purchasing a car and plugging it into a 13A outlet. However I’m sure the dealers will tell you all about that ;):D.

Yep the same guy that put him through private and international schools, got him debt free through university, bought his first car & gave him £30k towards his first house...............I’m really stupid. Could have spent less on him and more on me.:(
