Hi Guys

I recently purchased a year 2000 E280 (W210) and I've been very pleased with it.
However, I noticed that the exhaust seemed to be blowing (Even though this wasn't mentioned in the MOT (advisary) that the trader carried out) so popped into Kwik-Fit over the weekend to get them to check it out.

The exhaust appears to be the original and there's a performation in the centre box (Rust) and there's also a leak where the pipes join.

Kwik-Fit could only find details in their book for an aftermarket system for an W320 W210 ad said that they would need to make some calls today re one for an E280 (I assumed it would have been the same!?).

They have just called to say that no aftermarket version exists and that I have to fit an original MB part at a price of ............. £508 !!! :(

This is a crazy amount of money for a rear-exhaust system so if anyone can point me towards a suitable alternative I'd really appreciate it.

The following system "look" correct but says it's for upto 1997 cars only - I've dropped them an email to check.

Really ?

It will be interesting to see what the company linked to above comes back with as this looks to be the same part but only costs £175+vat for the centre & back boxes.

I only bought the car 3-weeks ago and have a 6-month warranty (via a warranty direct type company) but exhaust systems is not listed as something that's covered - Cat's are though.
I think I need to go back to the trader and ask him to replace the exhaust, or at least cover some of the cost.

According to the Euro Car Parts site the combined centre & rear exhaust boxes have a cost of £236.61 +vat (#702220370) so if they quoted you £400 for just the centre box they must have mis-quoted you!?

hi the quote was for middle and rear box combined and it was a genuine part, but wot i am saying is main dealer was cheaper, is the one you have been quoted for a genuine part or a pattern part. From my experience having had mercedes for several years and been down the route of pattern parts they will not last as long genuine parts. regards daz

Daz,
I recently got a rear exhaust ( which include the centre pipe ) for my 1998 W210 for £115 supplied and fitted from a local chap here in Stilrling. He says he gets a lot of MB customers for exhausts. I was also told its a Wilson or Watson exhaust ( can't remember ) and is actually quite good. It's a HUGE hunk of metal for £115. It's been on a month now and seems alright.

Let me know if you want his details.................he might be able to source one and get it delivered to you, a local mechanic should be able to fit it no bother. It took them all of 20 minutes to change mine !!

Hi Daz

Sorry, I didnt read your post properly the 1st time.
The £508 was for a genuine MB part, but only because K-Fit have said that no pattern part is available which struck me as odd.
Sounds like KF are adding a significant markup onto the part.

Was the £300 from MB inclusive of fitting?

Does anyone know if the exhaust did change on a W210 E280 after 1997?

Ask at the dealers for a price.

I've been quoted about £250+VAT for the rear section of exhaust (catalysts back) for my 1998 E430, but £450 fully fitted!

Needless to say I'll be buying the part and fitting it myself.

"HI
THE END YEAR FOR THIS PART IS 1997
SO ,NO IT WILL NOT FIT YOUR CAR
SORRY
REGARDS BRIAN"

It looks like something did change after 1997 !? :???:

I reckon that you'll be able to source the part more cheaply from the dealers.
You can then pay someone else to fit it.

At the price that Kwik Fit quoted you you could get the dealers to fit it more cheaply (my quote included VAT btw).

I don't see why an E280 exhaust should be more expensive than one for an E430.

Get in touch with your local dealer and find out. Qoute them you full VIN and you'll be certain that it's the right part. Once you have the part number you can always try ordering it from elsewhere.

Even including carriage I can't see how Kwik Fit justify the charge. Bunch of shysters. Just reaffirms why I never use them.

Kwik Fit tend to price "non standard" jobs high. They want to fit tyres and exhausts to Mondeo's and Vectra's all day - not deal with anything out of the ordinary. They quote high and if they do get the job then they make decent money on it.
