It would make the most sense to do neither. The most economical thing to do is to own a car with a working engine???? Or am I missing the point here? If your engine is shot, sell the car on ebay???

I can't think of a better reason to sell a car....apart from, if you've just lost your licence.....

big milage?? young car
i am thinking of buying an E220 cdi classic 1999
only theres huge milage on it 190,ooo miles
although the car is mint?
can i expect to get much more milage from this engine???
what problems am i likely to encounter with this
also would i need to change the timing chain???

many thanks for any help
jak
Is this the car you want to re engine,,,,Whats wrong with it??????????????????
If you are only thinking of buying it why would you want an engine,,,why not walk away and buy one that is ok....

Jak, I think you have just discovered why the previous owner was selling the car.....

Jak,
I'd do neither. New will be prohibitively expensive and whether to fix or not depends on what failed and what it took with it. Theoretically the repair is best as you can go right through and do a full recon - but again the cost may be heavy.

I'd go to Dronsfield, Mercman etc and pick up a good sensible mileage used engine with a decent service history - should be loads around.

As a straight answer to your question, a new engine will cost loads more than reconditioning the old. The only question is whether the old is shot in such a way that it can't be reconditioned.

If you're trying to work out whether to buy the high mileage one and what it may cost you it would be easiest to assume that the old engine is knackered and therefore price for a used replacement one as jberks advice above. This is likely to be the middle cost option.

In the event you may find the engine is fine, or that the existing is able to be reconditioned for less cost than a replacement used. You won't know until you know what's knackered. Either way there's no point in budgeting for a new engine - you'd be able to buy a decent other car for less.

You should bear in mind that the high mileage will put people off when you come to sell, but if the car fits your budget and it's the best car for your budget then the choice is yours - and good luck!

well i suppose

my friend is considering buying the car
the car is in absolute mint but the milage is high hence the keen price
even if the engine whacked it, it wouldent make sense to scrap such a young car hence he was wondering
suppose the engine went,
would you
A, go for a full recon [assuming thats what it needed]

B, replace the engine
which would be the most cost efficent

what do MB reckon the average cdi engine is good for in miles???

cheers jak

Just weigh up the risk, and make sure the price reflects the high mileage and the probability of future issues with the engine. Unless you can save the labour costs by replacing an engine yourself, eg from a salvage car or a breaker, then its normally 'game over' if a car engine needs replacing.

Also take into account that the gearbox, diff, bearings, injectors, air con pump etc have all done 190k so its not necessarily the engine block that is going to give you trouble.
The price should reflect the fact that whilst it looks like a newer car, mechanically it's old and tired so something pricey is likely to give up in the near future. It goes without saying that without a FULL and thorough service history your friend should run a mile!
