Ok I’m not unhappy with the performance of my x218 but I could be happier with the fuel consumption, only getting 35 mpg with‘normal’ driving. Better performance would be nice but not at the cost of economy. If I went down the route of remapping how much would it cost and would I be better off?

Hi. As suggested earlier, the promise of better mpg after a remap is plausible but unlikely. If you stick exactly to the speed limits and your habitual acceleration profiles, you will need less throttle input. This will improve your mpg, possibly by as much as 5-10%.

BUT...most people who have a remap go on to drive the car like they stole it. In this case, you will use MORE fuel than before.

I'm now on my 4th remapped/chipped car and I'm yet to see any mpg gains. On the other hand, I can't say that my mpg has actually gone DOWN, either.

My experience tells me you're likely to have much more performance available while keeping your mpg roughly the same. I can't judge for you, though, whether that justifies the cost...

I was offered an eco map when mine was done. it was basically same power and torque but a promise of more MPG. Naturally I went

I'm just struggling to think what good it would do me... Do I slap it down on the table in the pub to silence the naysayers? Do I post it on dating apps to get a better class of bird? Do I frame it and put it above the mantelpiece to impress guests? Do I use it to get extra kudos on the forums?
Wait!? If I get a remap and a dyno print out I can do all of those things?

I'm signing up first thing in the morning!

You could probably get away with just a fake print-out. Much cheaper...

I took my old S211 270 from 170 to 225 with mapping and then did another 60k miles, I was using a company fuel card at the time so had to keep detailed logs of the mileage, before and after the map I was no different over a month of running, but I had the power there when I wanted it, fair to say it made a difference

and hence 'wealthy'.

I used to wonder why being married adds years to a chaps life expectancy. Then Dad said "son it just feels like it".

OK; I'm not sure how to rationalise this:

When I had the remap done a fortnight ago, I was thrilled with the power, smoothness and quick throttle response. However, in the last 2 days, the car has gone back to how it was: laboured, noisy, lurchy...

I SWEAR this is not my imagination - the difference is night and day. But how can it happen??? Is it possible for the engine management system to "unlearn" the remap in some way or to compensate for it?

Anyway, I reckon the only way I'll confirm my impression is to take Gazwould's advice and get it on a dyno. The re-mapper hasn't got a rolling road so I'm taking it to a different place this Thursday.

Will be fascinating and - hopefully - illuminating.

Not possible for it to forget the map.

More likely that its in limp mode.

No - it still shifts when you boot it but it's a bit coarse and unrefined, just like before the remap.

But thanks for confirming the first point.

Interesting (possibly) update:

I was puzzled by the lack of low-down smoothness and power and the sudden lurch at 2250rpm so took it to the dyno at Shropshire Automotive. They have reported 222bhp and 496nm, hugely down on what I thought I was getting from the map (260bhp + 570nm).

HOWEVER, they have diagnosed a faulty upstream lambda sensor which they say MIGHT explain the power discrepancy. Hopefully, when I have this replaced, everything will be OK. Fingers crossed...

Hi guys, can anyone advise if it's safe to perform ECU remap on 2017 w205 C200D (1.6 , 136 bhp)?I've heard this can seriously affect turbocharger?

I would ask someone like MSL Birmingham.
Early 90's I had a Golf 1800 GTI 16 valve 136 BHP, at that time it was quick!

Yes we do lots, all within safe spec for the turbo.

A bit late to this party but...I decided against a remap on my 218 after GAD rang to say they were postponing it because of problems with the "new" software on the 642 engines.
In the end I decided sub-7 secs to 62mph is quick enough and that driving in Sport is frisky enough for me.

The late 642s in the 218/212s just before New model run have odd map definitions in them. We have done 2 but one needed tweaking.

Not from remapping, all of them have nox faults, most have been sorted by now but we still see them occasionally, same as with adblue etc
