I suspect my 320sl five speed is not selecting fifth gear. At 60 mph, how many rpm should the engine be turning, I get 3000. Is this correct, or is it still in fourth gear?
Had my gearbox oil and filters replaced, what a difference to low speed changes and startup revs it made.

just thought I'd add that mine does 2400rpm at 100 in 7th, which is still in the 1600 - 2800 max torque range.

Haven't got a 320sl and mine is a diesel so won't be remotely similar (red line at 4500 would give a top speed of 90, not 142) , but my E240 would be pulling around 2200 at 60 in 5th so Id expect yours to be lower than that. Id' say you are in 4th too. Same calc as above, 3,000=60 so 6,000rpm (red line) would be 120 flat out and bouncing off the limiter. A 320sl should be good for 140+ so you certainly aren't in top.

I strongly suspect your still in 4th, my 500E does 25mph/1000revs in 5th and that is low geared for the engine size. As its not up-shifting check the oil level first. Low oil level will mean poor up-shifts.

MB auto oil pans have a known problem with distortion of the flange over several changes, which gets progressively worse the more changes that are done. The fitter tightens the pan up to even moderate levels and distorts the gasket allowing oil to seep out. Watch out also for transmission oil leaks on the cooler hoses.

I have the corect info here. this is for SL320 V6 5 speed box

To determine RPM ratio

Speed 62 mph
chack engine rpm in selector 3 4 and D
3rd = 4500 rpm
4th = 3150
D = 2300 appox

Driving car in 5th, move lever to 4, accelerate to 62mph, foot off throtle
then immediately move selector from 4 to D and the 4 to 5 upshift should accur. move from D to 4 and down shift 5 to 4 should accur. move selector from 4 to 3, downshift 4 to 3 should accur. if two downshifts accur, all gears are working.

Please anyone before you have a go at me, I did not write this and it is not my reasoning. It is from the MB data base.

I was just going to suggest the same thing - drive along at 60 then move the selector down and see if the revs rise indicating a gear change.
