An old B-Class.
Gents / Ladies,

Anyone in the York used this guy. I'd like to try using an independent now that my wife's car is out of warranty.

All feedback appreciated..

If no advice on here, it might be worth giving him a ring and asking a few well-chosen questions. Alternatively if you're not too far away, pop in and have a look round. Also by asking when he can take your car, you should be able to gauge how busy he is.

Richard looks after my current SL500 and my previous SL350, excellent service and has all the correct equipment. You won't go wrong there, he's very helpful.

Have you had a look at his website? Having previously been on the tools, then managing the Service Departments of MB in Scarborough and York, before launching his own business, the 'paper' qualifications are there. However, we all know what some MB Service Departments are like, so I would be careful there. Has also has an MB trained mechanic.

I was a little worried to see a sump catch pan underneath his ramp, though, because in the days of plastic sumps, I would have thought he would be using oil extraction for his own peace of mind.

Hopefully, someone nearer than I might be able to help with first-hand experience.

Nothing wrong with draining in principle?

No, absolutely not! Just that there have been a few horror stories on here of plugs jamming (from lack of use/or overtightening?) and plastic sumps cracking as a result. And then the outcome of bodged repairs not to mention liability.

However, the relative merits of both systems for changing oil have been well debated on these forums, so hopefully not inventing that wheel!

I spoke to him and a couple of other Indi providers in the area a few years ago when my C was getting towards the end of the MB service plan. He seemed to an okay guy and having had experience of him at MB locally would have been happy to try him if the need arose.

However I traded the C and 2 E's later I'm still on new cars and MB service plans. But, depending where you are, there are others you may want to have a look at. Nearer to me than York is Steve Magson at SM Autocare in Pickering who set up on his own some years ago when the MB dealership he worked for since being an apprentice closed down. I did use him to MOT the C before selling it and was suitably impressed . The is also a an Indi in Foxholes who worked for the ill fated MB dealership in Scarborough before setting up on his own. Others on here have used him but he is a bit out in the sticks so he may not be your cup of tea. Can't remember his name unfortunately.

Due to my location my choice would be SM Autocare at Pickering who, at the time of me asking, was less expensive than Richard Hollins. Here is a link to his website http://www.smautocare.co.uk/about-us/4543966329
