well i just found a handy tool here http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/road-tax/
it tells you the expected road tax rates for all cars over the next 2 years what it is basically saying if you have a car 2.2ltr or over manufactured between 01 and 07 you are basically screwed when it comes to road tax. i can see a lot of cheap cars on the market over the next few years, i was looking at changing my 1998 c class for a 06 or 07 model next year but looking at the road tax i think i might hang on slightly, what i dont get on the mercedes models road tax is higher for a automatic than a manual, when most mercedes are automatic is this just another government rip off

Hello

My car goes from £210 now then £440 and then £455

Given how much cars lose tax it very small proportion. It certianly will NOT make me buy a smaller 'greener car'. I buy what I want and like not what 'they' want me to buy.

If you swap for a 06 or 07 car just think how much your losing anyway?

Buy the car, enjoy it :)

It's not entirely correct though, as they generalise, the DVLA vehicle check works on the actual registration and gives the emissions and how much VED you have to pay for your actual car.

£210, £415, £430 for me.

Clearly we need to buy 6/12 month road tax taking us as near to March 2009 as possible, then just before March 2009 buy 12 months!

In a year's time I may well be paying £3360 per year for petrol, so I don't think another two hundred quid on road tax will stop me keeping the car I have.

rip off or not it's simply down to what the Co2 is. Mine is 180gm so I am just in the 175-180 band - phew. In many ways it is probably the most honest way to tell the efficiency of the vehicle. After all, mine is auto and has fat tyres so will be less efficient than a skinnier tyred manual.
Oddly, the wifes freelander is in a higher tax group, (£210 instead of my £170) despite being 500cc smaller and being a vastly more modern diesel when compared to the ancient lump in my 270. So I guess hats off to Merc's engineers.
The difference looks a lot but in reality its 1/2 a tank of diesel.

Mine will be going up £90 as my CO2 is 202gm, the VW I've just bought is 221gm and just fits into the same bracket.

well i looked at a c220 estate as thats what i'm hoping to get hold of and tax on that was £430 by 2010 i may very well opt for a c200 or c 220 diesel if i change as these are both £270 a year, althogh i might hang on for a new shape 08 on as these are £210 for the c200 or c220 but i dont get a c180 08 on is £180 a year for manual and £270 for auto

Well it makes very little sense to me. Our V5 Golf which had a 2.3 engine and was an 03 model will go up to £200, yet our Merc which has a smaller engine will go up to anything between £400 and £500 depending on which derivative I click on

is this not a scam by the goverment to have a higher turn over of new cars for lower road tax to make more money from old cars .And in doing so taking peoples right away from buying what they want and keeping it if they choose to do so .

its as bad in ireland the goverment are changing too . to co2 not engine size

Mine goes £185, £185, £200. I think I can live with that.

LPG has nearly doubled in price since I first started using it but it still half the cost of petrol. I can live with that too.

That just leaves the problem of driving around in a 14 year old car. Well it's a proper Mercedes Benz, so I think I can live with that as well.

Therefore I think it is safe to say that Messrs Brown and Darling can get .......

Just a thought! Does the % bio fuel in the diesel have any baring on the Co2 emissions? over 100% dino fuel.

Just went back into the Parkers site and my VED rates have dropped from the 400+ down to 260 for '09 and 270 for '10 ?? sorry it was me not putting in that it was an E320 'CDI' not quite as big a shock as 400+

Cheers

:)

I own several cars, for different purposes, most of which sit in the garage or on my drive for most of the year with just occasional use,eg people carrier to get me to the airport, sports car for sunny days (not many of those) yet i still will be paying the same as a high milage user. its a rip off and a tax on ownership and not usage. :(

Don't forget that the road tax is to pay for the roads, isn't it? So why the hell are we all paying a fortune to tax our cars when its all now down to co2 rating? I'm sure the planets health etc is not on Mr Darlings mind at all.

Sorry, I can't see your logic.

Buy a house, don't use it - still pay Council Tax, Standing charges on gas, electricity, water etc etc.

Simple choice - we buy, we pay.

Coucil tax pays for street lighting, cleaning etc, not a problem, if the house is not used, no electric bill etc. If i dont use my car i'm still paying for "road tax". Why not put it on fuel. Only fair. The more you use the more you pay, no problem. :)

Road 'Tax' is supposed to pay for maintainance, upgrading etc - not a problem. If the car is not used, you don't pay for fuel/fuel tax.

Moving on. If the Road 'Tax' was scrapped and the tax put on fuel. How do you think Big Brother, would then be able to keep tabs on you, as far as MOT and Insurance is concerned? Remember - The Government wants to know where, what, when and how each of it's 'subjects' are behaving, have been and are going to go - 24/7. Remember George Orwell.?

How does paying road tax help the government keep tab on you???

i love that comment they dont exactly do a lot of maintenance or upgrading around here although they are widening a dual carrage way by gloucester soon to add a bus lane myself i cant see the point as not many busses use the route, mainly it's service busses which are 2 a hour where is the point in spending a couple of million installing a bus lane in and out, extra traffic lanes would make much more sense.
