Good afternoon ladies and gents, I’m the very pleased new owner of a GLC63.
First Merc I’ve owned although I’ve driven other models over the years. It’s also the very first car I’ve actually owned from brand new, and decided this was the one that would be a ‘keeper’, but especially as it’s the 43rd car I’ve bought now and I need to stop losing money
I’m currently running the engine in and haven’t reached 500 miles yet but have already decided on a hand-held tuners and I’m eager to play

Advice needed and greatly received please: do I drop the oil at 500miles and renew with a mineral based oil In addition to replacing my filter?
I’m aware I shouldn’t drive in sport mode or drop gears, not exceed 4500rpm or 85mph until I’ve reached a thousand miles. Then another oil change. Then when I reach 1800 miles yet another oil change.

So have I got this correct? If so what oil should I be using please?

I also intend to replace air filters to aid engine noise, should I avoid the oily k&n panel filters and stick with pipercross as I usually do?

Hello and welcome

Where are you based?
Get it run in then take it to GAD or MSL, they will make it fly. Don’t waste money on filters or hand held tuners. I’d also not be going off piste on the engine oil.

As above. Don't bother with K&N, pipercoss et al and especially avoid tuning boxes of any kind.

If you want to play with that kind of thing get something cheap and more basic. The potential to screw the engine is very real if you don't know what you're doing.

Better to take it to GAD or MSL and gave it properly remapped.

To add to your running in instructions don't use full throttle, sit at constant engine speeds for long periods of time (such as on cruise on a motorway) or labour the engine (though that's pretty hard in an automatic).
Vary engine speed and load.

If it is brand new won't MB be doing your oil changes?

Quick replies thank you.
The tuning box was from msl as I spoke to them earlier. I’m in North Yorkshire so it’s a very long drive each way, and I like the option of owning my stock file for a reflash if I need a warranty repair. Should I avoid their hand-held altogether then?

I have a local tuner with a dyno, but they don’t have expertise in the Merc and used super chips for years. Super chips are in administration now :-(

It’s convenient that I’m commuting over 80miles a day on the motorway then following your advice, soon be ran in at this rate.

Regarding the air intake: so I should also avoid a dry filter like a pipercross and stay with paper filters?

-and no, my car won’t be going to Mercedes for any service work as they’ve already proved to be unhelpful and pedantic. I’ve tried two dealerships closest to me, and they won’t even give out information regarding fuse locations in the car as they deem it ‘technical advice’ and want the car booking in for a couple of days instead.
-Also misleading about warranty repair work and ill-informed of when I actually need to drain/replace engine oil. I expected better at this price point.

Also where on this forum would I find the info for stock dyno figures please? I see mercedes are conservative so wanted to view other users experience on this?

Cheers in advance.:D

There's nothing to be gained from a filter change.
MSL box should be fine but my own preference is a Dyno tune where the map is tweaked to your specific vehicles needs.

No need to mess with filters as probably sensors attached to filter boxes etc that need a work around then as LK suggested. Guess you need to find a merc indie to keep your warranty in check then if your not going to use a dealer. Personally I dont see the point in fiddling with a brand new car unless for the remap option, but thats just me I guess:D

Dyno tune is preferable yeah I agree, hell of a drive though and I'm very busy until October and I'm eager for the extra available power ;-)
I wanted the R8 V10 but two seats was a nono according to our lass, I was also keen for a GT-R (and still am) but the rear seats are absolutely pointless as children don't even fit so that was a nono too. My previous vehicle that i traded for the merc was 498bhp V8 and would hit 60 in 4.0 flat. My two other cars are stock other than a remap so have some 'life' especially the 335d. Basically I like power and love cars, all types of all ages, and seek the best from an engine so enjoy the tinkering journey until I move onto the next fascination.
You don't have to use mercedes for servicing to retain warranty (or any car manufacturer), but the service needs to be in accordance with their guidelines so I'll ensure this when booked in. I can't justify £800 for an oil/filter service when I've competed this countless times myself for about £120.
I don't want nasty induction kits at all, but the aftermarket panel filters add a little noise and never need replacing, thats the only reason for asking. I'm not into noisy exhausts either, had too many and I've grown out of that now. I would install hiflow cats if it gave me more power, and didn't sound like baked bean can. Early days but eager to spend :-D

Thanks for the input and advice so far, I'm grateful.

Which engine do you have in your GL63?
If its 2013 - 2016 it will be a 5.5lt M157 which I have in my E63.
2017 - 2020 is the M177 4.0 Biturbo.

Both excellent engines with plenty of scope for more power. Over 700bhp possible in both with just a remap.
The "tuning box" is actually "My Genius" a handheld device that MSL will send you a remapped file that you remotely upload to your own ECU. You are free to reinstall your own stock file or remap at any time should you want to use the dealer for servicing.

It's slightly different to a live map where the parameters are adjusted whilst the car is a dyno and you can see the actual gains with before and after dyno runs.

Edit.....just re read your first post and you have the later 4.0lt biturbo engine.

I had my E63 remapped at MSL last November and couldn't be happier with the result. I made a 330 mile round trip to have it done and plenty of people travel further to MSL due to their knowledge of AMG remapping.

-thanks for the Reply, yeah I have the glc 4.0v8 twin turbo 4matic.
I’ve seen real varying results on mapping, some have in excess of 600 some are near to 700 and some are more conservative. Msl girl said today I’d be at 550 with the mygenius and I thought that seemed fair, as it was a safe number but I’m happy for it to be a higher number of course.
Don’t mind travelling but if I need any aftercare it’s another 7+ hours of driving to return and a very long day. If I can succeed with the mygenius I’d like to give it a try and then on to local rollers to see actual gains.

Yeah so the MyGenius system is a mini version of the DimSport Genius system which is a tool that some tuners will use to communicate to customer cars.

The mini version will be setup with protocols for your vehicle and will VIN lock to your vehicle.

The issue will be that newer Mercedes especially AMG will have a CPC system and have had some minor ECU changes which will stop communication as it's a new layer to stop people tuning them.

So things like speed limiter removal and even actual calibrations can be stopped from even going on the vehicle until tool manufacturers come up with new protocols to get round these systems.

One of our tool manufacturers have been working on CPC for over a year now and still no luck, it will happen it's just time. Then that protocols will have to filter to other companies such as DimSport and Alientech, Autotuner or B-Flash and then filter down to these hand held communication systems.

If you need any other info please feel free to give us a call or drop me an email to Anthony@gadtuning.co.uk

Many thanks
