hey there im new to mercedes and wondered if you could help

i own an e plate 190 e 2.0 auto

when sitting the car sounds really lumpy revs sit at about 500rpm...

when i put it into d to move and steer is cuts out.

i have a loud tappet sound from the engine when driving not sure if this is contributing to the problem.

no matter how i drive the car it does the same thing when trying to turn the car at low revs the car cuts out. and feels really lumpy.

looked at plugs all cleaned nothing helped there... tried atf fluid looks oer the recommended level oil is fine too.

not sure what to do...

can you help.?

Well its idling way too low! :) Should be around 850 rpm when warm. The idle can be adjusted with a screwdriver, the "tap screw" is under the airbox facing the drivers-side front wing.

Hows the cold idle?

Mike.

Also you may find that the butterfly valve by the fuel distributer head is not closing properly. Some ATF on a lint free cloth and clean just under the valve flap. To open the valve just press it down gently.

A few suggestions could be a air leak causing ur low, lumpy idle, vacum leak.
There are serveral rubber bungs and vacumm connections to ur inlet manifold which can cause leaks if split or broken.

Your engine type has been know to suffer with worn camsafts and followers for the tappet nosie, with high millege. easily checked with ur can cover removed.

Sounds like an electrical fault. That's a weird one with the wipers coming on by themselves. That would seem multi function wiper etc stalk fault but I don't know how that would effect the starting and idling issue. Malcolm may know why the wipers are coming on on their own.

Check OVP relay for idling problem and that can cause hard starts and stalls too.

The wiper thing may be unconnected to the idling fault.

I have had this very same wiper fault, It was the fuse box unit wet inside.
To cure it I got a S/H box from a scrapper (£15). To change the box is easy, Remove all the wiring plugs from inside the car,
Disconnect the ground strap at the bulk head (this is a pig to get at, remove the RH air vent and hose to get a long extension and 10mm socket onto the M6 bolt head) it is located near the top of the bulkhead.
Remove the 4 fixing screws from each corner through the top of the fuse box,
Lift out the box,
Reverse the above to re-fit the fresh box.

I doubt that this will be associated with your engine fault.

The water contamination had corroded the inards of the old box, creating a partial short sufficient to trigger the electronic combination relay wiper circuits, other combination relay faults were also present on mine, the turn indicators washed the windscreen and the windscreen washer switch made the seat belt lamps flash but only if the ignition was off.

The whole problem on my car seems to have been caused by an ill fitted fuse box lid, the hinge was incorrectly assembled. Make certain sure that the repair includes checking for a good seal on the clear plastic lid.

fusebox

That fuse box was a work of total non-genius. Hopeless fragile fuses and a lid that can't really be opened properly.

Mike.

Hi mike agree with the fuse box have struggled with it for years, until last week,I flipped the rear U shaped bar off the back sqeesed it in and the whole lid just lifts off.I bet you knew that tho,not realy impressed with the bullet fuses, sooner have the plastic type, cant have everything I suppose

I dont know if this helps at all ,but my wipers were coming on when I put the lights on,just a few wipes and then they parked up,traced it to a bad earth above the offside headlight under the bonnet, there is a bunch of earth wires attached there, and somehow the wiper motor was getting power probably through the self park mechanism in the wiper,I cleaned it and rebolted the earth and it has been fine ,I would check all earths as it could be your starting problem as well

That U shaped spring hinge pin thing has two small brass bushes in the main black plastic part, they can fall out and will cause the lid to leak if they are not in place. It is a bit fiddly to put the lid back without them falling out, but do so you must.
