I have looked for some advice on this before, but all posts seem years out of date and photgraphs no longer there... my S124 230te has a real issue with throttle response / gear change, just around 28mph - i have changed fluid and filter in the 'box, changed the donuts on the propshaft, but changes continue to be jerky and holding a constant speed around 30mph tiresome! any advice welcomed.

Please put up a birds eye view picture of what you have under the bonnet.

Vacuum leak will cause jerky shift on a 722.XXX trans.
Otherwise there is an adjustment dial on the side of the box to adjust the smoothness of the shift. White plastic round cap with protrusion at approx 8 pm in the pic.
Excessive gap in the clutch packs inside the trans will also give a thump. You can adjust some of this away at the risk of excessive slip when using top end power.

There is another adjustment to do with engine revs and throttle position and I cannot remember for the life of me how this was done. To many drugs, sorry mate. Ahhh, throttle linkage!! Can be adjusted up or down the long thread next to the butterfly valve on later model 320s at least, yours should be very similar, take note of where it is now and experiment up and down the threaded portion of the adjustment range. It should respond to two complete turns, that is the degree of sensitivity of that adjustment. The red cable is the thing that you adjust to synchronize the amount of linear travel that corresponds to the linear travel of the gas pedal. That cable tells the trans how much throttle you are applying. You can adjust it to tell the trans you have a lot of power i.e. harder shift or not a lot of power = softer shift, as far as I can remember. Look for the corrugated boot in the engine bay by the throttle linkage, it will make sense when you see it.

The plastic cover with protrusion is very sensitive a small travel of 30 mins on a clock face should be noticed by a different shift pressure depending on which way you turn the cover. If it falls off don't panic just press it back on - easier said than done but it will go back on very easily - don't force it back on! They are calibrated and sealed from factory you may need to break the seal...??

The electrical terminal at the back of the trans will not be on yours as this is a 5 speed 722.5xx trans, that is the control mechanism for the 5th gear, you can see the unit bolted to the back of the trans, yours will otherwise look the same IIRC.

The drugs must be doing a good job!
The detail in your reply is so nostalgic and informative.
