E320 CDI Sport 2007
I just thought it would be a good idea to post this tale, in the hope it helps you guys if you experience a similar issue. The car is a 2007 E320 CDI Sport, with a 722,9 Transmission.

Back in June this year I started the car as normal went on short journey and noticed the engine light was on. Car was running fine. Later that day I was about to drop the dog off at the sitters. Started the car and if fired up and as I got to the top of the road the dashboard lit up like a christmas tree. SBS, ESA, ABS etc. Car went into limp mode so decided to turn it off and re-start it. This is when the nightmare happened. It would not crank or even click and had to be towed 100 yards home.

Had the car towed to a local Mercedes indy that I use, and they couldn't get the Star Diagnostics to access or read anything on the car. It was completely locking everything out. They decided to change the front SAM, and that made a difference as the car would now talk to the diagnostics system.

The SAM and ECU issue totally lunched the battery and that had to be replaced. The car would still not start, and now there was no PND display on the dash. Suspected the gearbox module near the gear selector and replaced that, and still the same no change.

Eventually they started to consider the Transmission Control Module may have been blown by the SAM. This was removed dismantled and sent to ECU Testing http://www.ecutesting.com/ who found several faults and repaired it with an unlimited mileage warranty.

This TCU computer component lives in the gearbox sump and is immersed in oil. Once this unit was returned they re-built the conductor plate and re-installed it in the gearbox. It was only then that the car accepted it was OK and gave permission for the Star system to see most of the electrical components including the ignition to start the car.

The final challenge was re-coding the re-installed TCU and this took 2 hours for the car to again recognise the Star Diagnostics system and stay connected before everything could be re-set. It has taken 2 months and 5 days to get repaired due to the lack of available spares from mercedes in europe.

Lessons learnt: The 722,9 has some serious issues and with cars around the same age as mine they are failing at an alarming rate. Remote Star Diagnostics are not able to easily access the cars on some occasions, as mercedes have changed the parameters to now insist having it connected to MB HQ for it to work. This is having a negative effect on independant garages faced with complex diagnostics.

Should your car start changing gear not as smoothly as it once did, and you have a 722,9 transmission you might want to have this checked out. Merc will charge around £1500+Fitting where ECU testing can repair your module for around £220+VAT.

I wonder if these cars were over engineered as finding out what is wrong can be painful.

There's no such thing as over-engineering. There are only varying levels of acceptable risk...

Yup, these things happen. Still it could be worse. You could find out you've had a family of mice living between the cylinder heads of your engine for instance...

Nice and warm but the damage they could do must be horrific. New loom/canbus time I imagine?

No, new anti-knock sensor, 3 new core plugs and a massively improved engine performance! It had been in fully-retarded mode since I bought it. Long story.

Smart + others :)
New exchange tcu's cost slightly more from mb with a 2yr warranty and indies equipped with a genuine star can code these in for a lot less than Mercedes.
