I have just had an extended (24 hour) test drive in a new Elegance C class. I very much liked the car, but for one issue: I found the seats hard and uncomfortable. I think it was artico material. There was a wide range of adjustments, but try as I might I could not say that I was comfortable over any longish distance drive.

Am I alone in finding this a problem? I have been driving an S 70 Volvo for 12 years, so perhaps I have been spoiled!

I hope to have a similar trial in an E class soon. Are the E class seats regarded as more comfortable?

The other thing I found was tht the "organ pedal" type accelerator was also tiring over time - again I have been used to a "drop down" pedal. Anyone else find this a problem?

I run the 1999 V70R so I know what you mean, as these seats were the best in the world, and a very important thing when buying a car.

Its important to sit in a seat rather than on it, without sinking so the the spine becomes curved.

My SL 230 has got very good seats, but thats another matter, could it be that the Artico is too stiff.

The E class you should find OK

Having a similar issue with my CLS AMG - this has no less than 9 separate electric adjustments for the seat (as well as the 2 steering adjustments of course which is all part of getting the right driving position) and I am still struggling to find a really comfortable seating position. One thing I would say is that even in a 24 hour test drive, you may well not stumble on the right adjustments for you. It is almost too complicated....

It's a shame as the car is excellent in every other respect (well the mpg can't really be described as 'excellent' but I guess I knew that before I got it ;-) ). There is no doubt that seat comfort is one of the most important things in any car, yet very difficult to evaluate properly in a typical test drive.

The irony is that my Lotus Europa - which had one adjustment on the seat (forwards/backwards) and that's it - was exceptionally comfortable even on long trips....

Cheers

Forget the Merc! Buy a BMW 3 Series M Sport - their Sport Seats are the best you can currently get.
