Is it an MB dealer?
As Whitenemesis - what's the car's details?
I would have expected any purchase to be supported by a recent dealer service (or indie service on an older car). If it does need a B service don't ignore it - what does the service book say?
If no history you need to do some interrogating at the supplying garage.

it is not. is independent garage and dealer which i bought from. i only had the service history from MB in 2005 but 2006-2008 was done in normal garage. from my prvious posting that i have probem with the EPS steering was noisy. it is common wit E class moel as i haev been told.

however, if i just do the B service (oil change etc) he quoted me for £70. is that cheap ?

Dirt cheap. Too cheap by the sound of it. The oil alone costs most of that, then there's the filter, and the labour. Could be that the car has not had proper MB servicing in recent years. I'd look for a decent MB indie in your area and get it done thoroughly. At least that way you should know that the car is right, from now on.

With Ron here. That's silly cheap, even for an A service, which is "just" an oil / filter change! B service is typically >2x the cost of an A service.

A bit of a side point, but how can you tell if the car is due for an 'A' or a 'B' service? I still have a way to go before mine counts down to '0', but how can I tell which one to do?

Dave,
Mine is a W202 C280 and I service it myself. A service every year or 9000 miles, B service every 2nd year or 18,000 miles. I have no fancy electrics to have the car tell me when it's due. I go on time/mileage so generally it is once a year.

Helps if you add the car you own (model, age etc) to your signature and sometimes location helps too.

If the car is still under the 3 year warranty and you ignore what ASSYST says the guarantee will be null and void.

If out of guarantee, you will get free breakdown cover in UK and Europe if you service at an MB dealer. You also have a far better chance of getting a goodwill contribution from MB to any repairs you may need. And you get a 30 year rust guarantee.

Also, there are sometimes recalls (which others may not have responded to) and numerous service campaigns to update and improve your car. An MB mechanic has posted that updates go on even up to 6 years old and beyond. Numerous faults can occur because owners have not had proper servicing at an MB dealer and not had all the updates done.

That is one reason why I, and many others, will not buy any car that is not full MBSH.

Have a look at this thread to see an example of the numerous updates to one of the most reliable models MB have ever made: the new S class.

There's another thread singing the praises of Europa Prestige in Sheffield, although for all I know the poster might own the place:

However a smaller specialist might be more appropriate for your car.
