In for a service next week at my indie. First time I've had a car where it's in for an annual having not done the mileage to justify a service beforehand. Nice.

What should I be getting him to look at in particular? Car has done 96000 and had its ATF changed at 85000, so thatold chestnut's sorted. Spring mounts are fine and the cross member has been welded, so anything else in particular I should ask him to look at in particular?

Before anyway notes the vintage of my car and that it's a 210, the rust is being dealt with elsewhere! This will just be a mechanical service; the guy's a good 'un, ex Merc with full diagnostics but less than half the hourly rate.

Cheers

Hi Alex, it sounds as if you've pretty much got the problem areas sorted. In addition to the standard oil and filter change and checks, check up on the last time the brake fluid was replaced and coolant. The pollen filter is also an item that can be overlooked. These are all additional service items at the dealer (semi hidden costs).

In addition I usually ask my garage to spray a coating of waxoil or similar anywhere that needs guarding against corrosion underneath the car (as its a 210) especially towards the rear of the car. The fixing points for the rear suspension hydraulic oil supply pipes sometimes corrode, especially on the 124s.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Malcolm - great stuff.
The Waxoyl's a good point. I think he's been all over the back end of the rear (!) last year and replaced some brake pipes, but the oil supply pipes are a very good point.
Cheers

Rust (that old chestnut)

This is just a remix of an old tune, but I think I've had it guys - end of tether with the rust and and all that.

I've 600 notes set aside for new front wings (fitted, blown in, etc) but I'm not going to bother. After a year behind a three pointed star, I think I need to come back when I can afford a younger and less porous model of MB. Or mad amounts on an older 124, that pinnacle of MB excellence, etc.

The rear wings have started now, and peeling back the door rubbers (rear doors - I only checked the front ones when I bought - Arggh, Muppet!) revealed plenty of foul orange peely crap.

Even with its weedy engine, I've loved driving it - makes the forthcoming loss-incurring sale even more of a pity. I nearly bought a 2 years younger 2.5 20V V70 instead at the same money, and that's what I'm going to look for now.
