Just wondering if anyone can help me? My e350 cdi w212 2012 reg is slightly cooling down on the motorway and then it vibrates slightly but when the temperature is normal there is no vibrations

Welcome!

It would be helpful to know how the. thermostat is behaving ie, how long it takes for the engine to get to 90 degrees and whether it stays there or fluctuates?

Thank you for the quick reply. It gets to 90deg in around 15 minutes but it cools down to around 83deg if I am any stretch of level road. If the temperature sensor was bad then why is it getting to temperature and cools down. Also I had a egr valve change and new blue coolant was put in not the orange type

My E350cdi had a new thermostat at 65K miles and is a very common failure on these engines. If the stat fluctuates it’s probably starting to fail and the vibration may be due to the ECU responding by over-fuelling mine did.

If you decide to fit a new stat buy genuine from MB, not cheap but as the stat provides data to the ECU it’s the best way to go

Did you see orange type coolant in the water bottle before you had the EGR changed ..?

Thank you so much
Where is the thermostat located and what are the prices for one? I am Taxi driver and the car is much loved by all so I am trying to keep it running smoothly. Many thanks for your advice greatly appreciated

It’s reasonably accessible at the front of the engine, if you’re having it fitted at an MB specialist expect to pay £230ish fitted, the part is £150ish (not cheap) but I wouldn’t recommend using aftermarket parts

Hi Malcolm. I didn't change the thermostat as yet. However I have been putting shell v power for the past 3 days and today I noticed that the vibrations eased by around 90% and the thermostat worked as it should. I have noticed that the rear of the car is covered in what I think is carbon deposits. Thank you for your advice. I will run it for another week and reply to you.

Interesting. What is your engine code?
And what is the mileage?

If the temperature is not rock solid when driving, and in my view doesn't warm up in little more than 5 minutes, then your themostat is on the way out.
Don't wait to get this changed, as it will cause problems with fuel efficiently and the DPF (diesel particular filter).
I drive a late 2011 w212 E350, so the same engine.
