Pure blind prejudice.

I was in Asda today -
Petrol 128 per litre
Diesel 135.6 per litre - difference of 6%

So if the OP does 6000m a year at 30mpg at 128ppl he'll spend £1162 on Petrol or £972.69 on Diesel....

So a massive 189.31 saving a year buying the diesel..... So if for the same power, the diesel car costs £1500 more - then it's only going to take 8 years to pay back the extra cost of the diesel car - and if the DPF fails (which on 6k a year it will.....) then that saving is blown away....

Mpg and purchase price being equal and even if the DPF does'nt fail, £189 a year is a small price to pay to drive a responsive-engined free-revving car (50p per day!)

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
Yup :)

Can't get used to how noisy and rough my 270CDi is compared to my old 320 v6 petrol.....

:(

I'm certainly not going to come down for one or the other. Probably having been used to decent numbers on my 2.0 VW engine, had I have had the wonga I probably wouldn't have looked at the petrol. But like I say what did it for me was the 'potential' to hit my previous figures (on a different car) but with a heavier petrol auto. Sounds unlikely and the reality bears that out. But not by much..
My average, to answer an earlier question in the 1100 or so miles since I got it, is 42.8 MPG. This evening , from cold through Newbury and toward Slough I was tickling 46 until I hit the traffic jam... On the other hand 3 of us at work have bought C's over the past few months, my 180 one C250 and one C200 diesels - Both of those are being used for longish stints into work and they're getting significantly more to the gallon than mine. But they also cost 10k more..
Enjoy the one you've got.

Hey GeeAy,

That's great mpg from the C180; what mpg is your collegue in the C250 returning?

Nothing would have pleased me more than to enjoy the C250CDI Coupe that I changed my beloved C32 Estate for last December, but the reality is one year on, the car has turned out to be an absolute Friday afternoon dog. I has been a real dissappointment in truth, but if there's a bad apple in the barrel, I am sure to find it!

I am grateful to have the rare opportunity of either changing it for another same spec 2011 diesel car with similar miles or for a 2012 250CGI Coupe with less miles and £3k+ more spec for no extra money.

Given that my commute is start-stop hell, I average only 30.8mpg overall in the diesel, 24-27mpg on route to work (temp depending), max 12k per annum. I am fairly confident a C250 petrol will get close if not match those figures and I'll have a lot more fun in doing it in a newer better spec'd car! Test drive of the C250CGI on Thursday will be in rush hour over same route and under same conditions, but with a place to open it up on way back!

Hi AMGry Man, he reckoned on up to 60mpg on his mainly motorway commute - Like myself he's got light feet, but he also says he's lost about 5 mpg since he had a fuel pump problem and some upgrade -so mid 50's. I'm please with mine thus far though. Though i was driving it home the other night and I had a metallic rattle on left hand bends which disappeared when I put my hand on the centre console. Turns out I need a new watch strap....

Hey GeeAy,

LOL! I had the same issue with a 'knock' on even slight acceleration which happened to be my sunglasses in the front centre storage compartment! I suppose if I can hear that in a diesel, shows how far refinement/sound-proofing has come on

I presume your friends C250 returning 50-60mpg was a CDI rather than a CGI?

Both CDI - sports. a 250 and a 220 Estate to be precise. Spoke to them this morning and todays run was 52 and 55 respectively. The 250 in white with the glass roof looks absolutely gorgeous.

Am beginng to think that with the exception of the C63 (which has a straighter leading bonnet edge and grill) the lighter cars like my diesel (Iridium Silver) and in white, they look a bit monk-fish like!

I plan to keep the car for 10-15 years

LOL, I like that. I have always said it "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Considering the low mileage you do in a year, I will suggest you stick to the petrol version of the model you have in mind.
