I've never owned a Mercedes but am considering a used 2004 SLK230, 13,000 miles. I had it checked out, and they said it looked great but has a small oil leak at the gear box. The past sevice records showed that a few months ago it was brought in for leaking oil at the front and back of the transmission.

Are these leaks anything to be concerned about? The car is under warranty, but is it normal to have leaks in such a new model? Any advice appreciated!!!

If I were you I would not... Considering spread malfunctions in new models and a fact that it leaks, I would not own this one. And plus it had a problem with gear box oil leak.

Dont buy it. Unless you really must have it, but you should consider a proper inspection by AA or RAC. Only and i repeat, ONLY buy it after the inspection and providing you are happy with the report. Any faults, walk away.
If the seller isnt happy with that arrangement, walk away. plenty of good cars out there for you, so dont bother with a duffer. Why is it for sale with 13,000 on it when its this years etc etc.

and dont be roped into a discount for estimated repairs. if its got a fault it should be covered by the warranty anyway and as i stated, any faults with the car and its anyones elses. not yours.

let us know what you do.

Avoid it if its not fixed. Mercedes are impossible to deal with for warranty repairs and will use every excuse to avoid it. They may try to tell you it's within specification, then you fail your MOT because tester will say...risk of fluid on tyres causing accident. Of course by then you are out of warranty facing a fat bill.

Seems like the fault was not properly fixed in the first place (.. and it's a fault that should not have occured on a new car!).

There will be plenty of newish SLK for sale as the new model has just appeared.... and prices will be falling all the time. So, take your time and be choosy. Look for the "final edition" versions that were fitted with all the extras and possibly consider a 6-cylinder, 320 instead of the rougher 4-cylinder 230.

I personally would walk away from that car and look for another with no problems because the way Mercedes are built now you will have plenty of faults to complain about in the future best of luck just make sure it?s a good one.
