Shudder as turn off engine

I have had a 300D for just over a year. It is a 1989 model, and has done 200,000 miles.

I have noticed recently that just after I turn the key to stop the engine, the car shakes and shudders as the engine comes to a stop.

Is this normal? Can anything be done about it?

Sounds like either the solenoid stop valve is not cleanly stopping the flow of diesel, resulting in a ragged shutdown or, if you have an immobiliser fitted, this is essentially doing the same.
First point of call would be the electrical connections to the solenoid and possibly to any air meter .. might be worth viewing the operation of the solenoid, with the ignition on/off but without the engine running just to check it is opening and closing cleanly. If not it is due a change.

Hi

I think that your fuel shut off is vacumm operated rather than electrical.

it sounds to me like your engine mounts may be knackered!! at 200,00 they have possibly come to the end of their life!!!!

let me know how you get on.

How much should it cost to have new engine mounts?

It is very common for the shut off vacuum pod atop the IP (injection pump) to develop leaks with age as the diaphragm inside can no longer hold sufficient vacuum to effectively shut the fuel supply off to the IP. The result after switching the key to off is as you have described a shuddering and shaking engine.

The repair is easy and inexpensive.
