Hello everyone. I'm new to your forums as I just recently purchased a 97 C230 for my wife. It has 114k miles on it and was very well taken care of. It runs and drives excellent except for an annoying shudder when it's in gear with the brake on. As soon as I give it gas, the shudder is gone. No hesitation, shifts smooth. Come to a stop, shudders. Park or neutral, no shudder. New motor and transmission mounts. Any suggestions where to look next?

The transmission fluid hasn't been changed by me, but appears clean and at proper level. The car idles at 800 in park and drops to 650 in drive or reverse with the brake on.

My W210 E300TD does the same - always has. Whether it's as bad as yours is a total guess of course, but if I'm in stationary traffic for too long I just pop it into neutral.
My tick-over speed is around the 600 mark - too low to hold on a hill - but my specialist says it's right.

But do you honestly think that's right? How many of you guys with a Mercedes have a shudder when you apply the brake in drive or reverse? This can't be normal. I'm leaning toward a new transmission valve assembly. I'm not a transmission specialist but I think this is either a torque converter or a pressure issue that's controlled by the transmission valves and solenoids that control pressure to the torque converter. Is there anyone out there who has had this problem and fixed it?

I think I'd ask a specialist or MB tech to sit in it and comment if I were you. Obviously something's not right if you're this concerned.

Good luck

Why not slip the box into N on a slight down gradient and apply the brakes to come to a halt, that should give you a few pointers

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
I used to have a shudder when the gearbox was cold in the mornings, but it was slightly low on fluid.

What happens if you remove your foot from the brake, with the parking brake on, and creep the engine revs up?
