Well after a bit of a false start got the lens swopped over and all is well.
(I disconnected the convenience battery in the boot and the starter battery before I started removing the cluster)
The lens is attached to a black surround. This has 5 black tabs and 1 white one at each end of the cluster - initially I thought the white ones had to be pressed in and so I spent ages struggling with them until I realised you prise them up like the black ones!
Dead easy when you know how ! You just need to be gentle to avoid any risk of snapping the tabs - I warmed them gently with a hair dryer just as a precaution don't know if it did any good but it gave me peace of mind!
I had one slight issue when I reconnected the cluster to the car - a warning came up saying "Visit workshop" - this went out and then the display went blank and the dials were dead. I decided to unplug the cluster and when I plugged it back in just made sure it was well pushed in and hey presto. (It clicked when I pushed it in the first time but musn't have made a good enough connection.)
Everything works just as before.
All in all well pleased but I have in the process made myself another job - when I disconnected the convenience battery I shut the boot lid and had to open it with the key .... unfortunately the key is now stuck in the lock and I cant get it out!)
Thanks to everyone who has contributed their advice on this little project
