Hi, I'm a new member & own an 1997 SLK230 Auto.

I have noticed on a couple of occassions (usually within the first couple of miles from starting it from cold) that if you try and "kickdown" i.e accelerate to overtake / general acceleration, then the revs & engine noise seem to go up in accordance, but the car doesn't actually accelerate as fast as it normally does?

I don't think it's a fault as 99% of the time it is perfect good acceleration as it should be - no warning lights either.

Anyone else experienced this - perhaps some kind of safety feature as it is still fairly cold?

Anyone Any Ideas???

Not had anyone reply on this...

When I say it accelerates much slower - I mean about 50% slower.

Surely this is not normal? But why doesn't it do it all the time, and why no warning lights etc etc???

Heeeeeeeeeeeeelp.

We also have a 97 230SLK. not noticed this problem, however the gearbox does work differently when the engine is cold, it holds the low gears longer to force a quicker warm up. I would always allow the engine to warm up before using hard acceleration, purely to save engine wear anyway. Finally its not that the traction control is working, does the yellow warning triangle light up at the same time as you have the problem?

Mark.

Hi,
I had a similar problem on an E240, very occasionally on acceleration, seemed low on power, sometimes just for a few seconds or so, then just surged into life. Last week it didn't come back at all, in fact it slowed down and I ended up doing 40 on the motorway flat out, 3rd/4th/5th didn't make much difference. The garage replaced the Mass air sensor plus the oxygen sensor and its back to its old self. It wasn't temp related in my case but I guess it could be. Always seems to drill down to sensors on mercs these days !
cheers,
Julian

I also have a 97 230 and had come on the forum to ask the same question. If I leave my car without driving it for a day or two it is very sluggish to start with. The acceleration is embarrassing. Give it a mile or two and everything is fine. Maybe they just need a good warm up which I never seem to have time to do.
