SMOG CHECK CALIFORNIA CL55 2006

Had the crankshaft position sensor fail. No run condition. Waited 5 minutes and it started. Took it to MB dealer. Service advisor said that even after replacement of CPS, smog machine will not create a certificate until all "parameters" are reset in ECM. May need to drive the car 20 miles or so. Seems to me that if one replaces CPS and clears check engine light with OBDII device, should be able to pass smog. Sounds like a BS story to me. Anyone have any knowledge of issue? My first MB. Everything is factory stock 62,000 miles.

I must admit that I don't know what a Californian Smog check entails, but I suspect that as your mechanic was using an ODBII device it may not be able to reset the system in the same way as an MB STAR could do.

The car will self adapt once it's been taken for a run, but I don't think that it'd need 20 miles of driving.

Thanks for your reply. I need to learn about the STAR system. I know that the car is really fast and in great shape for a 2006, but being my first MB, I have a lot to learn. So does my credit card. LOL!

Well I have never heard of the CPS needing to settle in so to speak, once you have cleared the code or it was cleared itself that is it

Once the code is cleared that is it, there are no other adaptation parameters, especially that relate to the emmisions system that the CPS influences.
