Spacesaver wheel bolts?

I've got the "standard" alloys on my A209 CLK and the spare is one of those "wheelbarrow" sized spacesavers.
Now, missing from my took kit is any "special" short bolts that the handbook says are required. Are they hidden somewhere else in the car?
Can someone with a "complete" tool kit tell me:
1) Do I indeed need special short bolts for the spacesaver?
2) If so, are they in a box? Where's it stowed?
3) and finally, I'm missing the allen key for monually closing the roof if it breaks. Can anyone tell me the size and if it's a normal length one or some "special" £££ MB product.
Thanks,
Doug

I have the special short bolts for mine, they were under the spare wheel if I remember correctly, I only found them when I was removing the wheel from the boot to increase the tyre pressure. 60psi I think.

The newer Mercedes space savers use the normal bolts. As yours is a 209 then I suspect that it uses the normal wheel bolts. I would recommend RTFM

If you read my posting you'll see that I have RTFM - and it says use shorter bolts. My problem is that I can't find them !!!

What I'm asking is whether the manual's wrong (for an earlier model?) and I don't need them - or - whether someone's halfinched them from my spare wheel well and I need to buy a set.

Hi Doug
Yes the W 209 has a set of short bolts, in a blister pack laying in the bootwell. i'm sure yours is the same car as mine and you MUST use the short bolts.
Still on the Allen Key problem? I'd go to Halfords, explain it may be a special and ask to try a standard set of keys on sale or return. Not having a converto I can't tell you anything else.

Yes definately 60psi
In my previous post I said "same car" It's similar car (270CDI). Still think yours needs short bolt set.

Easy to see, have a look at the spare its self, if there in a deep bolt hole like the alloys do the no short bolts required, if only a shallow bolt hole then your bolts may well be missing!

in a blister pack laying in the bootwell.
That's where they were in my W203, except the blister pack was attached to the underside of the space saver.
Really not obvious until the wheel is removed - I had a panic thinking they were missing, as there are holes for them behind the side panel where the tools are kept (mine's an estate).

Just take a bolt out and stick it in the hole, there should be 18mm sticking out of the rear.

My SL has a normally deflated spare wheel that uses the same bolts

Found them!

Thanks for all the replys guys. Yes, I finally bothered to remove the spacesaver wheel this evening and, as promised, there they were - five shiny new (short) bolts in a red blister pack, clipped to the underside of the wheel. Took the opertunity to pump it up too.
I notice that the wheel well is easily deep enough to accomodate a full sized spare, if that's what you wanted - albeit not a (much) larger non-standard one - by disgarding the polystyrene overtray. I suppose the idea is to provide a well big enough for a punchured alloy to be carried as well as full loaded boot.
Anyway, no short bolts to buy - that's another thing to cross off my shopping list for tomorrow, when I call at MB Watford to order a spare key and other bits and pieces.
Does anyone think mud flaps are a good idea?
I'm undecided, but I am going to order a set of rubber mats (just for winter use) to substitute for the nice light grey thick carpet mats that are far too good to let the kids clamber over in their wet and muddy shoes. I'm hoping MB do a grey mat set, rather than black. I've tried e-bay, but can only see cheap carpet mats there and they're not what I want at all.

Yes, as Doug says, we W209 people have a horrible steel wheelbarrow spare; it's left over from dismantling the iron curtain I think! There's a big difference between normal bolts and the skinny spare bolts and I fear using the normals would have resulted in ripping the hub fittings (brake parts) apart.
Anyway, glad you've found them.
If your 209 is like others you've got different sized front wheels to back, so a standard wheel isn't realistic.
Interestingly my front wheels are of Polish manufacture, the rears are German. Good old MB - subcontracting at it's best!

Just a personal opinion here guys so don't come screaming down on my head - mud flaps tend to spoil the look of a car unless it's been designed in. I once saw an old guy (much as wot I am now), in an old BLMC car with retro fitted mud flaps. It looked like a granny in french knickers!!
The CLK lines are lovely. What for mud flaps? As I said, all personal viewpoint.
Doug ask about the MB blue wheel centres at £8 or £9 each if you want something to boost the car's appearance.

I'm rather thinking along your lines regarding the mudflaps and don't think I'll bother. I haven't seen a 209 with them fitted yet - I wonder why???
The blue wheel centres - I take it you mean the ones with the "old MB" badge like on the bonnet. Yes, I'm already thinking about four of those - and hinting like mad, hoping one of the kids will get me a set for Christmas. I've seen sets on e-bay, but can't tell the quality from the photographs. I'll ask at MB dealer this afternoon when I call for my key.

Oh no, not one of my rambling postings.....

Key ordered.
Good God, that was a palaver. I had to show them my passport (photo driving licence would have done), the log book, a utility bill and the car – which they insisted on going outside and checking the vin number against. Everything was then photocopied and I had to sign four times on various documents before I was allowed to buy one. I suppose it’s a sad reflection of the lack of honesty of today’s society that MB feel compelled to check, check and check again, lest they be accused of being complicit it an auto-theft.

Considering the articulate, smart suited young parts chappie and the extraordinary amount of polished wooden flooring, smoked glass and chrome that is today’s parts department, I suppose it would be churlish to balk at a smidgen under £150 pounds for something, in less frightening times, could have been bought from your local Timpsons or Mr Minute for five bob.

Anyway, I digress…… Ordered some MB fitted rubber mats – for winter use – and I’ll save the nice thick light grey carpet mats, snug in the house, until the better weather (maybe we’ll get some next summer). Oh, and a couple of quid for a seatbelt stopper, which I’ll fit tomorrow with the help of a soldering iron. Didn't buy the blue wheel centres today, but made a note to drop a hint or two before Christmas and see what Santa brings.

Everyone else in the Doug household has the most awful flu, so I’m stuck inside catching up with all the chores - which have befallen me since I was the only one to have a flu jab (and, I suppose, this is a fitting punishment for my smugness).
I should really be out in the garage “playing” with my Mercedes Benz !!!:)
