I am just about to change the spark plugs on my W208 CLK430 Convertible. The plugs at the front look easy enough to get to, but I am a bit concerned about access to the plugs at the back. The ones on the passenger side look just about impossible to get access to. Any tips before I have a go - would be greatly appreciated. Also planning on changing all the plug leads at the same time.

Hi,
There a lot easier than they look honestly, I have seen someone change them in less than 25 minutes, though that was with an air ratchet, and as SAM says you will graze you knuckles.
Have you costed the leads yet? Expect to pay well over £100 for a set.

Many thanks for the replies. I have ordered a set from ECP +/- £139 better than the £400 (£25 each) that MB wanted. I ordered the plugs from ECP a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised when the cheap Beru plugs turned out to be Bosch.

I hope to get into it over the weekend - fingers crossed & plasters on standby.

It is best to lever off the plug caps using an 17mm open ended spanner over the top of the cylinder head, this will stop any damage to the coil packs.

I will have to change mine soon

Many thanks for the advice guys.

I bit the bullet last night and did it. I was very surprised at how good the access was once I had got the coil packs out of the road. All 16 plugs, leads and 1 coil pack changed using parts from ECP - purring like a good un now.

16 plugs???? what the hell is under the bonnet????? or are they now putting 2 plugs per cylinder in a V8??? seems a bit pointless that though.....

The V6s and V8s have been twin spark for a fair while now. Merc just don't shout about it - unlike Alfa Romeo ;-)
