Hello everyone!
I just bought a 2005 C220 CDi, and as the car was delivered to my home, the handover was a little hurried, & as such I really did'nt grasp the functioning of this device.
Could someone please explain in laymans terms as I have already checked the manual & still cannot fathom the device?

Welcome to the Forum. A better authority than I will be along soon to explain. All I will say, is that I have that option on my ML - and I never use it.!! Cruise Control, Yes - but a Speed Limiter, a definate NO.

It sets your maximum speed...very useful in roadworks that have a set limit on the Motorway, or if you want to make sure that the "specs" cameras dont get you. It is easily overridden in case of emergency by putting your accelerator foot to "kickdown"

I use it on the M5 at Bristol & Exeter to ensure I dont inadvertantly let my speed creep up::p

have to disagree Jez - it's a really useful gizmo - UK roads are normally too busy to use cruise for any significant length of time - but the limiter is great in certain circumstances - eg road works with speed cameras - stops you sleepwalking into a ticket

for Bobz benefit - press the end of the stalk to activate & select a max speed (in 5mph increments) by nudging it up and the car wont go above that speed - feels a bit weird at first, but you soon get the hang of it -

there's a failsafe built in - if something crops up and you need to go quicker, just floor the accelerrator & it cancels - in much the same way that touching the brakes kills cruise control

I find this device useful as I have the original average speed cameras not far from where I am based.:(
Many friends have been fined and some have lost their licence because of these cameras. Also useful for long stretches of roadworks where speed can creep up.

Fair comment about the SL.

On the matter of SPECS - why not simply change lanes?

They claim to switch cameras to check alternate lanes at some locations.
Not sure if that is just to stop people doing it because the specs cannot catch you, or if they have actually set any up like that.

I spoke to one of the SPECS I.T. bods. They said that the software wasn't 'intelligent' enough to track the same Reg No over lane changes. The camera's only 'see' one lane - allegedly, of course

I have heard that as well but too much of a coward to try it!

They are working hard on this one and have almost cracked the changing lane get out, no doubt we will be informed when this happens.

I would love to know if spec camera's allow the same 10% as the gatso's do

So why do they only ever set-up two cameras to cover motorways (3 lanes)?

The software doesn't need to be intelligent... A camera logs a reg passing it's location. The next camera x miles along logs the reg plate passing it's location. Time stamps from each log are compared and the mean speed over the distance between the cameras calculated. Tolerances for lane changes (= a small difference in actual distance) and speed allowance, say +10% are factored in and bingo, your nicked! :)

I don't believe in the lane change get-out. Now, shadowing by lorries, that's a possibility

That may work, but then does the last camera take a forward or rearward photo, if the front one takes a forward shot, then they would not need another, and they must all be video cameras and not still

They are all forward facing, constantly imaging cameras.
