Our company CEO Rikku's van has started making a weird whistling/hissing noise. She alerted me to it this morning, and it's been bugging me all day. I've had a similar problem on my 316CDi, and reckon it's either a leaky hose or a dodgy water pump.

I can't be bothered fiddling about under her bonnet, i'm tired, so before i send it in to Mercedes, you guys care to help a tired Senior Executive out?

I usually have things like this fixed, i love Merc Sprinters, but right now, i can't be bothered, the IT industry is driving me nuts!

Senior Executive..... Granville?

Many many things to look for, here's my tuppence:
1) Switch on/off air-conditioner - does noise stop?
2) Your car is turbo charged, so could be a leak in the turbo to inlet manifold piping, or ancilliary connections such as rocker breather pipe. If you have a smoke pellet, put it into the airintake silencer and watch for where the smoke comes out.
3) Exhaust, have someone bung up the exhaust outlet and have a listen in the engine bay.

4) Give the CEO your van!

Thanks for your help, i'll run this list by her tomorrow, and get her to find out what the problem is. This way she'll learn DIY!

Although i know it isn't the turbo, i'm used to listening to Sprinter engines, i know when something isn't right, and the extra hissing aside from the purring tickover doesn't seem right to me. It gets louder as the engine revs up, as well as the turbo whistling, sounds like a mad snake under the bonnet!

Nice one guys! You're slowly making me feel better! ;) My old mechanic instincts are coming back to me, i stayed up ALL night last night waiting for Rikku to get back from Shropshire! I didn't want the van giving up on her in a strange place!

I'm going to bed now, maybe i'll be even better tomorrow morning!

Night all
I'll update ya as soon as i can!

And no...i'm not Granville...but....f..ff..fetch a cloth!

Your Mercedes
E220CDI W211 Avant
A supersized BOA Constrictor stuck in the air box...

..is what it is...!!!

If it's worth anything mine started hissing and over a period got louder and louder to a wooshing sound (I drove it like that for about 2 months!)

Turned out that the CAT was breaking up and the back pressure from the turbo was escaping causing the hiss...

Had to replace the exhaust... Good luck!

(Oh and MB, even though they hear this all the time as a common issue will still want to run through a full diagnostics and rip you off)
