one of the injectors was chuffing so took off all the plastics to get at the injectors

when i looked it was the back injector but they where embeded in what i can only describe as black tar but when it cooled it became hard and brittle looks a bit like melted plastic

managed to clean around the injector to get it out and replaced the copper washer at the bottom of the injector seems ok now

what is this black stuff and what is causing it

It is fuel leaking from around the injector. If you have a search on the forum you will find many threads witch describe this problem.
