Some people like these sort of things;

Still doesn't fix poor injectors etc.

It is possible that your egr valve is not closing properly - sticking. This can be caused by carbon buildup or chatter marks on the piston. A valve stuck just slightly open will cause lots of black smoke and obviously upset your Nox readings at same time.

You can get EGR cleaner you apply through the air inlet. not sure if its as good as strip down and clean. As frontstep above recommended sea foam but check your codes(diagnostic) in case EGR is faulty or something else. The cat is better taken off to clean properly. you can get additive to apply through the 02 sensor holes but never heard it does a lasting job. I took mine off and cut the pipe each side of it and soaked it overnight in Wynns DPF cleaner and then power washed it.

thanks for the replies i am still trying to sort out several issues with my van agin i need some help have used 2 cans of on car dpf cleaner and that made it run better but i can't get rid of the nox exceedance error as fast as i erase code it's back
so today i went under the van to find the nox sensor only to find there is'nt one i have changed the oxygen sensor the one nearest the turbo the only otther sensor i can see and cleaned has a long probe into the dpf part so i don't know where else to look as there are no more sensors on the exhaust that match what a nox sensor looks like
i have another couple of questions but i will start a new thread

There is only two sensors on the exhaust. one in the cat and one in the DPF. If regens aren't happening or Dpf is could be the 02 sensor. Best to get a proper diagnostic with an independent or you could be spending money replacing parts and no difference. Black smoke could also be a sign of over fuelling and that could be a faulty injector or temp sensor. So many things you could replace before curing it so thats why you'd be better getting a session on star diagnostics as it could potentially save you a lot of money. Start with the simple stuff first if you cant avail of a diagnostic session as oigle said, clean your EGR valve. EGR cleaner available in cans at you local motor factors.
