Recently bought 2014 313 CDI and after my first long drive, I noticed lots of smoke billowing from under the van once I came to standstill in traffic.
I'm not sure how best to describe the colour, there was just a lot of it!
The excess smoke would dissipate after moving off again and getting up to 2nd gear etc.

I've heard this may be related to the twin turbo? Any feedback would be much appreciated!

FYI the catalytic converter was recently replaced before I bought the van.

Hello and welcome

Could be the DPF doing a re-gen
My VW Caravelle would Chuck loads out at times because of the DPF burn off - means the system is working perfectly

Thank you for your reply.
The issue is intermittent, so I'll keep an eye on it. If it was doing a re-gen, how long do you think it would take? The full journey was over 200 miles, and I was in traffic three times in urban areas/traffic.

Hi Kev, I'm still getting to know the van, but I would say it drives well, I haven't noticed anything unusual going up hills.

Thats good Aodan, You might need to plug it into diagnostics to see if any codes are stored?. if yours is the OM651 engine it should regen every 250-300 miles normally if its like mine. What colours the smoke if you remember? mileage on the van?

The van has done over 127k miles. I reckon the smoke was what I would call blueish, normal exhaust smoke colour, just lots of it.
How can I tell if its an OM651 engine?

As blobcat said it could be doing a DPF regen. sometimes mines does the same spewing out a whitish smoke when she's overdue a regen and its not getting the right conditions to carry it out. Just keep an eye on it to see its not everytime your going slow around town. Get her out on main road in 4th gear about 2000rpm or just over for about 10 miles and make sure vans not below quarter full of diesel. Regen should happen then if theres no faults
