As i went to add to my old threa di noticed it ende din about 4 posts form me...everyone was abit bored with it, so i made a new one as this really has me stumped!!

Had the head gasket done last week, had to have some work done to it by engineers to repair some corrosion and took a while, now its all back. Before the head gasket was done (after it properly went with the coffe stuff and everything) i replaced the thermostat, the water pump was replaced about a year ago, and before the gasket was replaced i isolated my heat exchanger and that made no difference to the temperature problems before, but the temperature still isn't stable after all that has been done and i am running out of ideas to be honest! Does anyone know what th eproblem could be? Same sort of symptons as before hills cause it to increase and general driving causes the temperature to sometimes creep up to around the top of the 8 on the 80 on the gauge, on flat motorway it generally stays stable but today it started fluctuating a bit even then at th etail end of a short motorway run:Oops:
for a while now i have had a squeel coming from what i thought was the auxillary drive belt, so i got the indie to change the belt a few weeks before the gasket, it still squeeled, I told him this when it went in for the head gasktet and he told me the squeeling was caused by a build up of old rubber inthe grooves on the idlers etc attached to the various devices it drives, and he would scrape them out and it'd be fine. He told me it mad the noise when just started but was fine there after when i took it back. I have since noticed that even after 30 miles or so of driving stopping at lights i still hear the squaeeling noise and as the engine revs up too, I know the water pump is still relativley new but could this be part of its mechanism being worn, and the sound of it not operating properly? This is all I can think of, possibly due to the dirty emulsified contaminated coolant it was exposed to during the time the head gasket was leaking?
I am open to any new ideas and I am short of time now as in a few weeks i will need the van every single weekend for big journeys and can't afford to have these potential reliabity problems, or the worrying about it not making it to places!

Thanks for the help guys, Bill

I would not be at all concerned with temperatures hovering in the high 80's or low 90's. That is where it is intended to run. Anything under 85 means the thermostat is not working properly. If the temp starts hitting 100 then be a little more concerned. Traffic, hills, speed etc all contribute to varying operating temps.
Re the squealing belt, have you check its tension? Too loose will squeal. There are products that you can buy that stop belt slip and squeal. If the tension is correct, you really shouldn't have slip. However you can sometimes get belt "noise" which can usually be remedied by some form of lubricant - soap or proprietary product. Try squirting some soapy water on the belt whilst the motor is running and see if it goes away. That will identify the problem.

Ok, after paying for one head gasket i am not keen tog et in ine for another one though! ha, so there is a mark for 80 then one above that, then anothe rone for 120 and are one tright next to that, is the one above 80, 90 or 100?
i am bothered because I am sure when it was all working perfect last summer the temp barely moved apart from when really gunning it onthe motorway for long periods of time i mean like 90-100mph then it would rise right up to that middle mark and a little over it but it seemed acceptable at that sort of speed!

Perhaps I'm stating the obvious here but is the radiator in good condition with all its fins etc, and is the flow of air to it good with no muck etc?

Squeling belt will be the alty pulley clutch, also feel the rad with palm of the hand, make sure the engs off! There should be no cold spots, or at least even temp across the fin area, cold spots suggest a blocked rad.

the rad is pretty good nick, cleaned it in my search for the problem before the head gasket showed itself. will have a feel of it tommorow.
However I think i am just paranoid now the temperature seems relativley constant rises a bit for hills and acvceleration but settles down around/between the cross bit on the 8 and the top, which shouldn;t be too bad but i am sure it was cooler than that before all this **** kicked off...but tis so long i can't remmeber.

Indicators show 80, then a mark for 100, then 120. I wouldn't be concerned unless it exceeds the middle (100) mark, unless it stays up there all the time and that doesn't seem to be your problem. As I previously said, ambient temps and traffic and hills all contribute to varying temps. I presume your fan is working satisfactorily too?

Fan appears ot be working fine, i'll give it a carrot test when i see a carrot.

mine has always moved at high speed, tooka few pic sof it and sent to a mate who runs a 310 MWB low roof and its reading the same as his so i'm happy with that, only cleaned the exterior of the radiator with a hose, didn't flush it or anything.
