Is the glow plug warning light coming on and staying on ?

A good place to start is the inlet temperature sensor, according to the workshop manual it should read about 6000 (6K) ohms at 20C.

I had a problem with the light staying on, I removed the sensor and found it was covered in crap, I cleaned it, problem went away.

Try a Rail pressure regulator seal: 013 997 60 45 £0.60p
Or a regulator, bit more: 611 078 01 49 At the end of the pressure rail held in with two torx screws.
Also the valve on the top of the fuel filter: 611 078 02 49 About £2.00 ish.

Try starting it on sniff, (aero start) if it fires it suggests fuel.

Well if you've had all that done and it's right, it must be an injector. The white smoke is excessive fuel, do a proper spill port test and find out which one is leaking and either replace it or get it serviced. It's a common fault but at £400 each it's an expensive repair.

If you have not changed it do it for the small cost, they allow the fuel to drain back when they are faulty.
