190e 2.0 1992 94,000. I have had the car since 63,000 (2 Years 4 months) with no major problems, usual issues tyres, rear shocks, brakes (pads and discs). It was in the family for 3 years prior to that with no issues.

On startup if I just turn the key and go there will be a rattle until the oil pressure rises. If I turn the engine over without firing and then go for ignition on the second try then there is no rattle.

Any thoughts? - Will probably not be able to reply again until tomorrow AM

TIA

The rattle is the hydraulic tappets waiting for the oil to circulate. On a cold start up there is no oil pressure in the engibe at all, hence as the tappets start to move it is literally metal tapping against metal with no oil to lube. Within a second your oil pressure needle should rise to 3 bar, or thereabouts and the tapping will stop. This is because the oil has now reached the top of the engine and the tappets have lubrication. The reason that the noise doent happen if you have already cranked the engine is because on cranking the oil gets circulated around the engine, even if it dosent fire....hence the tappets have oil. Hope that makes sense. My 190 does it occasionally as well, nothing to worry about. However, never rev the car on start up, especially when cold.

yes, i agree with matt about this problem on initial startup.
my car does the same rattling for a few seconds on starting the engine-it is not serious and a common occurence on hiher mileage engines.

Thanks for the reply - thanks many times Sunil.... :>)

I have it booked in to my local Independant (Bavaria in Aberdeen) for a 12K service next week so have asked them to take a look at the same time.

DOnt let them fob you off saying that the engine is knackered because of it!!

why not try a new set of of followers
even from the stealerships they are reasonably priced
(i found the MB part is the same price as the europarts copy)
i put a full set in and the rattle almost disappeared completely
while your there put in a new oil spray rail( £11 from MB)
+ £1.50 for the fixing screws
takes an hour or so but its well worth the time and effort
