Whilst I am in the mood to sort it out, (and there is currently money in the bank..) I'm looking to replace the OE blaupunkt system in the car with an up to date stereo as it won't easily talk to my ipod, the tuner appears to be on the blink, it picks up alternator whine, the CD changer is out of commission and my tape collection has literally disintegrated

Don't wish to spend megabucks but want something simple but decent (hopefully without millions of fairy lights). Would consider basic blaupunkt/alpine etc. Happy to use the existing speakers as they are not shot (yet) unless advised otherwise and definitely not interested in bass bins in the boot type installs.

Could anyone suggest an installer who would replace my stereo in the London area?

Cheers

The radio picking up alternator whine is consistent with water in the aerial or a faulty aerial, and not a fault within the radio

:p

the alternator whine is one of several reasons to replace the whole thing and probably the least of my issues..

re security - do people still steal tape players?

What I am saying is that the aerial can be responsible for the poor reception and just replacing the head unit may not solve anything

blaupunkt Heidelberg

and all the other Blaupunkts of recent years take an MP3 connector plug. Nice dimmable with dashlights display, blue backlit, red buttons, graphic equaliser and face off.4 x 40 watt. For handy money on e-bay, usually.

ok, so in theory then I need to look at the aerial and just replace the head unit with an ipod compatible one..

anyone suggest where to get this done - I'm snowed under with work and flat at the moment and any none essential diy just won't happen..

I've got an ipod wireless transmitter, it only works well in the back seat :? and outside london... there just seem to be no clear frequencies in the smoke.

thinking on it, I suspect my aerial connection is knackered as Malcom says - poor radio reception, poor ipod fm + alternator whine...

mind you in my previous car I had to wedge the ipod under the glass sunroof to get decent reception...

back on the list of things to do - but I suspect going down the list, we just had a builder round for an estimate....

For a simple and economical (read that as cheap) fix, i put in a Sony Xplod cd\mp3 player and rainbow 120 speakers. easy to use, lights up nicely and sounds great to me.

Why not look at something like:

http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=2301

It has all the features you are looking for, and will play MP3 or WMA tracks from a CD, by connection to the USB port on the front (just connect your iPod) or even from a built-in memory card reader.

A good price as well.
