My CLS320 has the start/stop button on top of the gear selector lever. Over a period of time it became intermittent and would only work when I moved the lever to the right in the parked position. Now it won't work at all.

My guess is that there are wires within the shifter mechanism that have work hardened and broken, and would like to know whether this can be repaired or do I need a new shifter mechanism?

Everyhing can be repaired if you handy. You need to take it apart and look.
Not sure how easily the switch can be taken apart - it may well be glue sealed.

its in ideal place to pick up dirt and may just need a squirt of cleaner.
