Hi all

What could be a reason for rattling noise when rpm reaches 5000 or more under heavy load. It sounds like pinking and too advanced ignition, but I think pinking should usually happen in lower rpm. I am driving with 98 oktane gasoline which is the highest grade in Finland.

...Or could it be worn valvesprings which are giving the sound from valves ?

What should be the position on gasoline selector when driving with 98 or 95 ?

Is ignition timing possible to adjust anyway ?

My second strange knocking noise is coming from the rear of my car. It is noticeable only when accelerating and same time turning to the left. It sounds like exhaust pipe is hitting to the  body, but I have checked it and it is OK. Could it be propeller shaft  or something else?

I have only 109000 km in odometer, but I am not so sure anymore if somebody has cheated me on it.

What is the normal oil consumption for 230E motors ?

sorry for my lousy english

Thank you all for your replys

Hi

I would check the ignition timing making sure that the advance is working ok with and without the vacuum pipe to the distributor.  Adjust the ign timing to 27degrees @ 4500rpm. This is the max retarded timing for unleaded fuel for this vehicle. If both the above are ok. Then maybe the cylinder head is coked up. B4 you take the cylinder head of you could check the valve springs but in my experience they are reliable. But they can break. It not difficult to check.

MB say that the oil allowable oil consumption is a 1ltr every 1500 miles.

Try checking the drive shafts for the knocking noise and the rear antiroll bar joints for breakages.

Hope this helps.

Olematonoskari,
If you do find the reference mark on the timing cover to check the ignition advance/ retard, do let me know- I would like to check my timing, but can't locate the ref point.

Cheers

Hi Daniel

There is no reference on the front cover. On your vehicle there is a bracket bolted to the front  cover or there or there abouts. The OT mark on the front pulley should line up between the The bracket. That is the O and the T will be either side. You will see what I mean when you look.

Hope this helps

Hi Daniel

Slight mistake, use the info as I have said to find the marker. But when you check the timing with your strobe light, against the figures that are stated on the sticker on the slam panel of your merc.

Sorry for the mistake, hope this is clear enough for you.

Thank you all for your answers

I found at least the noisy part under car body... It was.....exhaust pipe.

I also get rid of the pinking problem by changing fuel selector to N position
