trying to get head off over this (damp) weekend, and the rocker / valve cover is stuck fast - have removed the nuts and the auto box dipstick... have given it a smack in various places, and am rocking like mad but its not giving way...

anyone know of a good technique that doesn't involve a sledgehamer???

If you tell us what engine you're working on we may be able to help , make sure you have removed all locating bolts ,some are not so obvious.

D'oh... it a 1992 2.0 190e auto. I'm sure all of the bolts are off... 5 nuts - 3 on the left side and 2 on the right...

I had this problem & eased the valve cover off by using a thin trowel which I slid under the gasket & wiggled, prising the cover off. Took a while but came off with no damage.

Normally placing a block of wood on the side of the cover, and hit that with a mallet should work, if you have room, an upward stroke works best.
