I was working Saturday evening (I'm a Chef) one of my sons came in for dinner, for the drive home he took the SL and left me a Ford Ka, not much of a swap I agree but hey we all have it to do.

I left work at midnight, my drive home is around 4 miles down a country road, no street lights at all, about a mile in I saw a set of headlamps, main beam on thundering up behind me, my first thought were ,this guys drunk his driving was so reckless, (I know this road well having travelled it twice a day for 6 years) After he caught up with me he stuck himself on my bumper for the last 3 miles, main beam still on like he was pushing me, I still didn't know this was a police car.

Only at the end of the road where I turned left could I see it was a motorway Volvo, ****** stupid driving he was just pushing and pushing me, he had plenty of overtaking spots.

I suppose its just as well he took the SL and left me the Ka or I would of been nursing quite a few points today.

Reminds me of an incident a good few years back.

I had just taken delivery of a new Astra Van and was taking it nice and easy. Pulled out onto a carriageway into left hand lane and travelling at 40mph. Big Granada charges past and then a car pulls out about 50m in front of me. Check RVM and moved out to go by it as it was doing NO mph.
Next thing a large Carlton is right up behind me as I'm going past this car. It was miles back and not going fast when I looked in the mirror. He's weaving left and right and starts flashing his lights. I'm doing 40 which is the speed limit and the car on my right is going 30. I lit up the brake lights (without slowing down). Next thing the two tones are on - Oh crap.

I pulled over and he went by like the clappers - except the next traffic lights were red. Well this plain clothes guy jumps out and charges up to me. He was huffing and puffing and ranting and raving. I camly asked him what speed he was doing, which didn't help and at that point he threatened to put his gun (yes they all carry them here) up my a**e and pull the trigger.

The lights turned green so I drove off leaving him standing. I knew he was going to police HQ which was straight on so I promptly went left - discretion being the better part of valour.

Knowing what I know now (6 points and 2 close calls later) I would definitely have dealt with it differently

I too witnessed some bad police driving, involving 2 volvo's
Driving to work down a dual carriageway I'm in the nearside left hand lane doing 60. All of a sudden a police volvo comes flying past in the outside lane and cuts in front on me and then straight off onto the slip road without indicating whatsoever.
If that was bad enough a few seconds later his boy racer mate in his volvo flies past me in the outside lane then cuts in front on me and also takes the slip road off nearly missing the exit ALL with no indication.
If that was me or anyone else driving like that then I think it would be points........
Who do they think they are........

This is exactly how I got done about 10yrs ago. I was plodding along the A-90 at about 75 ish, slowed for the speed camera and then went back up to +/-75. A car came right up behind me (2am so couldn't see) with his full beam on, I slowed down he slowed down I changed lanes he changed lanes and when I got fed up I dropped it 2 gears and went to put a bit of distance between us. At 104mph on come the blues & two's. I ended up in the local sheriff court pleading for my licence - kept it but with 6 points and a very sour taste in my mouth. Would the Sheriff believe that Plod would do anything of the sort - would he heck.

Many years ago, I was being driven home by a friend in his new Datsun 240Z (that dates it!) when a police car overtook us, then slowed down to push us into overtaking him, which we did without exceeding the limit. Cop repeated this 2 or 3 times and then flashed the lights to pull over.

We stopped, the cop got out, walked back and asked to see my friends drivers licence. He passed out his licence, his police ID and suggested the constable should see him in his office first thing next morning and explain his behaviour and why he was not aware of what car was driven by his boss, the chief superintendant in charge of traffic police.

Never did hear the outcome of their discussion!

This is somewhat defeatist?

I don't know that it'd happen everywhere but, several years ago, in Kent, a friend of mine driving his father along a twisty single-carriageway road was overtaken by a police car in what he and his father both considered a dangerous place. They took the police car's reg. and reported it. Kent Police treated the complaint seriously, including detailing an officer to keep my friend and his father informed of the progress of the investigation.

They were informed that the police car was being driven by a trainee under supervision. However, it was agreed that the overtaking manoeuvre was at least questionable and my friend and his father were specifically asked if they wanted the policemen to be disciplined formally or simply warned about their future conduct. Without pressure, they agreed to the latter, as long as the policemen realised that their driving had to be exemplary at all times.

While the actual words are probably not appropriate here, perhaps the sentiment in the saying "all evil requires to triumph is for honest men to do nothing" is (apologies if the quote isn't correct)?

Regards,

The Police do a thankless task, but I'm afraid the odd dealings I've had with them, they don't fill me with confidence, I just feel like it would be a total waste of my time.:0)

You would think Lancashire police would know better as recently 2 of them killed a guy locally when "testing" in-car speed equipment (over 100 on 60mph road).
Neither got jailed but it was close.
Suspect if anyone else had done it they would be in the nick for several years.
