Hi

I want to remove the engine sump and acording to the workshop manual I have, it says that it can be done without removal of the engine.

However it suggest that the engine does have to be lifted a bit to enable a couple of the bolts to be removed.

Is this so or can it be done without lifting the engine.

Any help apreciated.

Regards

Which car are we talking about here?
Most can be done with the engine in place ,but because of the chassis cross member it is necessary to release the front engine mounts and raise the engine to create enough clearance for sump removal.

You will have to disconnect the exhaust at the manifold joints and at the support at the gearbox, also release the radiator fan shroud mountings and move it out of the way. Disconnect any wiring that may be put under strain by moving the engine.
I'm not sure how much you will have to raise the engine on your particular car but just do it a little at a time making sure you are not straining or crushing any thing until you have enough clearance.
Above all be careful, and make sure the car is well supported when you are working underneath; use axle stands, do not rely on jacks.
Hope this helps, Geo.:)

Hello,

A 124 300e is a 103 engine you can remove sump with engine still in. I think you will find that the engine need to be in a certain position to remove sump easily. Having the engine in a certain position means that all the big end bearing caps clear the sump. But typical i can't remember off the top of my head what the position is. You might have to do a bit of trial and error. But as already said you will have to undo engine mounts and jack up engine, You will also have to remove fan cowling. When i did one i didn't undo exhaust but it's up to you try and see. Don't forget when you have got the sump half out you will need to remove oil pump to get rest out.

Hope this helps a little and good luck.

This post reminds me of the XJ6 days when they blew holes in the piston, Jaguar said the engine has to come out,but I could jack the up and change the in situ, must have done at least 25.

Been there and got the T Shirt !

The Haynes manual read like a nightmare on the sump removal on the XJ6 series 1.......it read along the lines of "First remove front suspension...."
