tailgate autoclose on te estate

well don't i feel a plonker....ive just realised that my tailgate on my 89 200 te closes itself! ive had the car for a month now and had noticed a 'motory' sound when tailgate was closed but today i just gently left it ajar and it closed....tightly, its a 7 seater,is it some safety feature for rear passengers or something?

Guess so - it's one of the many things I really like about Merc estates! Keep your fingers crossed though, it stopped working on my ancient 230TE and the dealer said it wasn't worth spending the mega-bucks required to replace the motor (I think it would have worked out at £300 plus).
