Hello, having always read knowledge from the lovely members without joining, thought I would take the plunge and join. The prompt was a question about why ditch a fairly recent car for an old SL and so i could not resist.
Perhaps it is too soon to talk about it.... But I lost my car fairly recently having driven it every day for the last 13 years.... A few red buses thought to drive really fast through deep water in the recent bad weather... Long story short, waves of water deluging my bonnet and he ground to a halt.
Going through insurance and a new engine needed....
So I am surrounding myself in all things Mercedes and your posts are really helping to cheer me up ....

Hahaha... oh my goodness! The name actually was the result of a word game that started with a snickers bar and then combined with my then interest... Don’t ask... it seems like such a long time ago...

It’s a very nice looking car... and very tempting.... thank you.
Given the ‘issues’ over the last decade with it almost being rebuilt... ABC, valve blocks, suspension, struts yada yada yada... I had thought I would only buy new or max 3years old if ever I needed a new car... what do you think...?
I might need to start a new thread on that...

Depends very much on how much you want to spend really. New or nearly new won't be ~£5K...
Fairly sure the owner of the one I linked to would be willing to take an offer as he's just not using it anymore as he's using his motorhome on a weekend now and the trips to Europe are off the cards

It’s a tricky one as I really love the style of the R230 and the cost is near my street, just nervous because of all the trouble I had with mine and I had invested heavily keeping it near perfect... which is probably a bit nuts but it had enormous sentimental value.... I wanted to get it become classic...getting more perspective on the matter now... first car I ever bought and so can’t really get another... Merc tried and put me in all sorts of courtesy cars and it was only the S that came close.., in my opinion... so stick between getting a more affordable used one but given the age, know what lies ahead of it... well not so much the cars fault but all the mechanics who claim to be able to carry out the work just making it progressively worse... sorry not had much luck with garages... :(

I can't do links, ours is 05 sl500 rust free and I think all original paint 117,000mls green black blue paint so changes colour full sh. And surprisingly enough, only 1 fault, air con switch broken though air con still works in glovebox.
£6400 :D

Ooh same colour as mine... grey interior?
What did you do when we had our heatwave? I had an issue but it only needed filling up... thank you! and negotiating with the insurance at the moment but all good cars for me to keep in mind...

Yes dark grey, haven't used the car for a while now, only swapped the air conditioning switch over to my 55, as that switch was broken, that's how I know it is definitely the switch ;)
It is a nice car, the missus' old one, she updated to a later SLK 350.

I managed to get the AC fixed on my CL for much cheapness, by getting creative on sourcing the parts. I can help on this if needed.

Now all you have got me thinking about is getting that engine... just need to sort the rust out and I’m mint!
