After trouble free motoring since the AdBlue tank saga back in December, I started to notice a whistling sound, on a downward pitch, when letting off the accelerator.

Tried to pinpoint it, no other symptoms, no EML and could only locate the sound to ‘around’ the area of the turbo (but not the turbo itself).

Had to admit defeat and take the car to the local specialist. They located a very small leak from the intake pipe to the turbo. They removed and checked seals, which were apparently ok, so they’ve suggested a new intake pipe and breather pipe and we are hoping this fixes it.

They have checked everything out and they are not concerned, but I can’t have my car making noises like that, so the parts are on order.

There is some slight residue around where the small breather pipe joins with the air intake, so presumably this is where the leak is.

They did mention that my engine ‘breathes slightly heavy’ and suggested I floor it now and again to clear it out. I’m obsessive about not doing lots of short journeys and always let the car reach temp before accelerating hard (although I do drive fairly gently, only driving more spiritedly once it twice a month).

Car has only 43k miles and is serviced at 6k miles. Really annoying!

"Breathing slightly heavy" is an indication of crankcase pressure not escaping through the correct system or blow by past the rings or pistons.

Very easy nowadays to run a diesel without taking the revs much beyond 2000rpm on a light throttle my advice would be to make sure you increase the rev range to 3500-4000rpm when you can to help clear the EGR and inlet manifold of soot

Yeah, but if it was blow by, would that not burn oil? Oil usage is very low, if at all. Runs sweet also. Just can’t understand it

Yeah, I’m going to change my driving style now. As you say, quite difficult to get above 2000rpm especially with the 9G box, as it’s in 4th gear by 22mph. I do use sport mode periodically, but even that doesn’t take the revs much past 2k rpm.

I’ve only ever ran BP Ultimate and fuel consumption averages 65mpg.

I shall take your advice - that confirms it.

Not if the oil scraper rings are working properly and the compression rings are letting by or a piston is damaged allowing gasses past.
I would forget all that and find out how the crankcase breather system works on your engine as if normal blow by and windage are not escaping correctly that will give the symptoms of "breathing slightly heavy" when the oil filler cap is remove with engine running.

Learn how to reset the gearbox and start again. It's memorized your driving style zzzzzzzzz . Unfortunately . After the reset drive it with some gusto , 22mph in 4th is woeful ,my e350 goes all the way to 6 points in 4th . :)

Interestingly enough I have a local BP and Shell petrol station and found that Shell burns a lot cleaner

Interesting comments.

I take the beaters on the motorway weekly and use the gears to make the revs sit at around 2500rpm for about 15 minutes with some periodic flexes to 4,000rpm when a suitable quiet bit appears in traffic as not to annoy other drivers. Always done this with diesels and it seems to work well, the benefits were blindly obvious on the Astra GTC. Not so obvious on the Mercs other than being a bit sharper thereafter.

Is 2,500rpm too low for circa 15 mins?

A whining flapping sound when engine is decelerating quickly can be caused by a seized Overrun Alternator Pulley. Likely to be more noticeable for petrol engine but still fitted for diesel engines. See my thread

I often drop a gear with paddles on a run to increase rpm. And clear the tubes for a while

As others above, mine happily cruises on the motorway swiftly below 2,000rpm and I don’t use more than 1/4 throttle in town. To make up for it on the motorway (weekly) I drop it to 4/5th to get the revs up to around 2,500rpm at least and keep it up there for at least 15/20mins with a few bursts to use most of the rev range. I also go the long way round and to ensure it’s at temperature for a while.

Also helps to keep the oil fresh so avoid recommended long intervals and keep changing it out every 6months / 5,000 miles.
