An orange warning light came on with a picture of windscreen washers. I opened the bonnet and found that this problem was caused by lack of fluid in the windscreen washer bottle.

When I had the bonnet open, I noticed that there was a lot of noise from the top of the engine (230TE by the way). I sounded like a tappet.

I've never played with the engine before so I'm into new stuff here.

My question is, what wears out and what do I replace?

I had a look through this thread.

I took the cover off tonight and did notice one end of the pipe that feeds oil to the cam lobes was rattling about because the metal securing bracket was bent a little.

Was it just one, or more than that. does it go if you rev the engine up. With the rocker cover off you can see if oil is coming up at idle.
the hydraulic lifters are common.
You will get a load more answer's before the night becomes morning.

I forgot to mention that I changed the oil last weekend.

It sounds like just one. I may as well do what has to be done to all eight though, whatever that is.

Just remember to prime the lifters when you do it,

new lifters can be done in an afternoon, even with a basic toolkit, and ham fists lol

lifters? what are they? I'm a novice in this area. I am not sure what bits need replacing yet.

Looking at the camshaft/valve area, can I just undo four bolts and lift off a couple of the rocker things?

Hydraulic tappets £5.00 each + VAT at ECP. Don't know what Dealership price is though. You're right to do all eight at the same time. There was a thread not long ago re. priming etc., but I'm sure mercmonkey will keep you right.
Good luck and post up your experience of the job!

as long as you are methodical and make a note of where bits go back you should be fine.

I had a quick look tonight and then looked at the haynes proceedure. Haynes say to take the sprocket off...is that neccessary? If I was doing this blind, I would just undo the caps (maybe turn the engine until No. 1 valves are closed to be safe)

Once the caps are off, I take it you have to remove the small spring clip and remove the hydralic bit out the top. What is the best way to get clips out, I'm sure I have had problems with those sort of things before.

when refitting you need to turn the engine so the lobes of the one you are refitting are at the lowest point

also my lifters came out from the bottom no need to disturb the clips unless you are changing the spacers for thicker ones

The lifters don't seem to want to come out the bottom. It looks like they should. They drop down a couple of mm but I can't get them out. Am I missing something? It could be that the oil is holding them onto the spacers, is that posible?

Was in at the dealers at lunch time today to check out the parts. The pads for the top of the valves come in two sizes...3mm or 3.5mm.

Why the two sizes? and what size should I get?

The ones I have are the 3mm ones. The dealer lent me a 3.5mm one so I could compare sizes.

Could the 3.5mm ones be an option to compensate for wear in older engines?

I think I'll try the 3.5mm ones. If they don't work, I can change to the worn 3mm ones.

You said the tapping started after an oil change. The same thing happened to me , on a 1990 230ce, changed the oil and filter using the usual semi-synthetic 10/40, and had noisey tappets. I changed the oil again a week later using castrol magnetec 5/30 and problem resolved and that was 4 months ago and all has been well, so maybe you could try another oil change.

I thought the oil change might have had something to do with it. I think if had run it for a couple of days the problem might have sorted itself out.

I'm not sure why this should happen when you change the oil, it could be something to do with the position the engine stops and when you drain the oil a syphon effect draws the oil out of one of the tappets. I'm guessing though.
